To whom it may concern: -• --• - -• On August 24, 1992, a visit was made to the above referenced site to review the work - in progress for compliance with the structural construction documents. During this review the following areas were observed; Additional framing added to existing mezzanine at grid line 3 and E.5 for new mechanical duct work. New 2 X 12s were added per plans. Existing roof framing between grids 3 & 4 at E.5, verified that the members were 3-1/8" glulam purUns and not 4 X solid sawn pieces. Therefore, per the construction documents, no additional strengthening was required. New mechanical unit platforms on the existing roof between lines 3 & 7 and grids E to F. As the wood platforms were already roofed over their framing method could not be verified, however, the minimum heights required at the curb was checked and found to be within the limits established in the drawings. It is apparent that the applicable detail was followed in this regard. The raised steel platform was also reviewed and appears to be per plans. Based upon the observations mentioned above, we feet that the work completed Is in compliance with the structural Construction documents. Common cleaning solvents Include methanol, Isopropyl alcohol, acetone, and trichioroethane. Very small amounts of liquid (on the order f 5-10 cc) are used to clean parts for an individual assembly. Left over liquid Is poured Into storage containers which are located below the fumehood. In the past, these chemicals were disposed of by facilities personnel under the supervision of the Health and Safety Administrator. Photonics Lab personnel have not been responsible for disposal. For the volume production that is currently planned for the Photonics Lab, we anticipate approximately 1 gallon of residual chemicals per week that will require disposal. The second fumehood in use with our lab houses the lapping station. This station uses normal tap water as a vehicle and no solvents for lapping lithium niobate chips. The lapping operation uses diamond lapping films and polishing pads. Since only miniscule amounts of lithium niobate are removed from chip surfaces, no "slurry" Is created, Water from this operation Is returned to the normal drain. Lastly, we have a laminar flow station which Is In our present hybrid lab. This station Is used for Inspection and kitting of assemblies and parts. No chemicals are used at this station, In general. This process involves tIeuse of a and small amounts of flux at an operator wbr nce reworked, the pwa is transported to the alcohl oth for cleaning. The detailed description of the hand cleaning operation is as follows: (4) Alcohol clean The alcohol cleaning booth Is an exhausted fume hood work station used to manually clean electronic printed wiring assemblies. The station has 3 lidded stainless steel containers placed on a work surface inside the Iroquois Industries 5848 fume hood. The containers hold J.T. Baker 2- propanol (isopropyl alcohol). Two of the three containers measure 7 inch x 12 inch and hold .75 gallons of propanot max. The third container is 10 Inch x 12 inch and holds exactly 1 gallon max. The operator transports an electronic assembly to the station for cleaning. The exhaust blower is turned on, SENT BY: XEROX Telecopier 7017; 7— 8-92 ; 14:08 ; 6199313329w ;#30 the operator removes the lid from one of the containers, places the assembly In or next to the container, and cleans the assembly of flux residue with a natural bristle brush. The small amount of flux removed is Kester AMA formula 185. The lid is replaced and the assembly is blown dry using 30 psi compressed air. Each day a designated operator transfers the Udj,yU waste (approximately 2 gallons) from the containers to the hazardous waste safety cans. After alcohol cleaning, the pwa's are functionally tested. Next the pwa's are prepared for polyurethane conformal coat by first degreasing (see (2) above), and using cleanliness equipment. The purpose of the cleanliness equipment is to verify low NaCl contamination to ensure proper conformal coat adhesion and to ensure pwa construction does not break down due to unwanted salts and oils. The cleanliness equipment Is described as follows: A sample Is submerged into the clean test solutiqp_and' 1te.so1ution Is agitated for a predetermined period to p1b4!yte removal and solubilization of B1onic residual the sample.
