Gentlemen: In accordance with the request of Harry Deardorff, Structural Engineer, this letter has been prepared to present revised retaining wall design parameters for the subject site. It is our understanding that a retaining wall up to ten feet in height is planned and that this wall will be placed on the face of a 2 to 1 fill slope. We also understand that the wall will be tied back at the top by a grade beam system and will be a wood lagging and I beam design. It is our recommendation that the bottom of the retaining wall foundation be positioned at least 5 feet horizontally inward from the face of the slope. Provided a nonexpansive granular soil is used to backfill the retaining wall within the area bounded by the wall and by an imaginary line extending upward from the bottom of the wall foundation, a lateral pressure of 70H may be used to design the wall, where H equals the high of the wall in feet. The passive pressure may considered to be 300 pounds per square foot per foot of depth. The upper two feet of soil in front of the wall should be neglected. This recommendation assumes that the soil in front of the wall will be compacted when replaced.
