RE LA COSTA HOTEL AND SPA
Pursuant to your request on January 23, 1991, this letter is to clarify the electrical code
requirements in the remodeled hotel suites at the La Costa Hotel and Spa
During the inspection of the first demolished unit, it was observed that the space above
the bathroom ceiling is used to handle environmental air Per the 1987 National Electric
Code, Article 300-22(c), nonmetallic sheathed cable (Romex) is not allowed in this space
Type A-C cable was installed and is an acceptable material
In some walls the flexible metallic tubing was to be extended to meet owners
specifications In these circuits, the City required that a grounding conductor be installed
Carlsbad's electrical ordinance requires outlets served by flexible metallic tubing shall
have a grounding conductor run with the circuit conductors
The City also required that the oil-filled towel warmers installed adjacent to the bathtubs
be on a GFCI circuit This is a conservative requirement based on the assumption that
the tower bar will inevitably be used as a hand rail by persons standing in the tub

changes in work we are going to encounter i.ri the remodeling of existing
buildings E and F
Enclosed please find the appropriate individual unit electrical l«-»ad
calculations which indicate that each unit will require three 20 amp
circuits (In lieu of the existing two 20 amp circuits )
Also enclosed, you will find one copy of original electrical drawing
which Indicate that the existing switchgear and panels were sized, tnsed
on each unit having three 20 amp circuits Since only two ?0 amp circuit
were originally installed, there should be adequate capacity and room t^
the additional 20 amp circuit per unit
