Construction Inc. 2108 Lakeview Road Vista, California 92083 Re: Somerville Addition Structure 2127 Pintoresco Drive Carlsbad, California Gentlemen: As per your request we have conducted a preliminary soils investigation at the above referenced address for the proposed addition to the existing structure therein and the following report is hereby submitted. Purp2s2 Our investigation was conducted to assess the soil conditions at the site which may affect the proposed addition structure to the existing house and to gather soils data on which to base foundation recommendations. 1 SAN MARCOS ENGINEERING, INC. civil soils foundations R.L.W. Construction Inc. Soils Report, cont'd... !912021 9221222 The site is located in the Coastal portion of northern San Diego County and the adjoining low rolling foothills of the Peninsular Range of Southern California. The nearest known active faults are the Elsinore Fault Zone •located 24 miles to the northeast and the offshore extension of the Rose Canyon-Newport/Inglewood Fault Zone which lies 6 to 8 miles offshore beneath the Pacific Ocean about 10 miles to the southwest. Soils Investigation Three (3) test holes were excavated by hand at site at the approximate locations indicated on Plate 1 and marked as T-1 to T-3, inclusive. The soils encountered were visually identified and classified-, in accordance with the Unified Soils Classification system shown in Appendix C. Appendix B shows the log of the soils encountered. Penetrometer teats of the sidewall and bottom soils of the test holes were made and the results indicate values greater than 4.5 TSF. Soils samples were brought to the laboratory for further testing and identification. 2 SAN NARCOS ENGINEERING, INC. civil soils foundations R.L.W. Construction Inc. Soils Report, cont'd... The teat holes indicate the soils at site to be fairly uniform and consist of Tan to tannish gray dense to very dense Silty Sand (SN) to the bottom depth of excavated hole. Test hole T-3 exposed the existing wall footing of the house. Laboratory A maximum dry density test was performed of the site soils in accordance with ASTN1557-78 and the result is shown below: Maximum Y! Q2t4!! !12! Moisture Content (,') Tannish gray to tan Silty Sand (SN) *Testing in accordance with ASTM D1557-78. The existing soils are in our opinion of very low potential expansion. No expansion index teat was performed. Conclusions & Foundation Recommendations 1. It is our opinion that the existing site soils are stable and can safely support the proposed addition structure, provided the following recommendations are observed during the design and construction of the structure. 3 SAN NARCOS ENGINEERING, INC. civil soils foundations R.L.W. Construction Inc. Soils Report, cont'd... The Recommended Earthwork Specifications found in Appendix A forms part of these recommendations unless the provisions are in conflict with the recommendations stated below. In cases of such conflict, the specific recommendations stated below will prevail. It is recommended that the existing 3" topsoil be removed from within the limits of the structure addition prior to placing additional fill material to bring it to grade. The •addition structure can be founded with standard spread footings at an allowable soil. bearing pressure of 1800 paf. Bottom of footing should be at least 12" into the natural soils for the proposed single story addition structure. Perimeter wall footings should be at least 12" wide and reinforced with 1-#4 bar placed 3" above bottom of footing and 1-#4 bar placed 2" below top of footing. Isolated footings should be at least 18" square and reinforced with 3-#4 bars placed both directions. S. Slabs on grade should be at least 4" thick and reinforced with welded wire mesh placed at mid- thickness of the slab. The slab should be underlain by 4" sand and vapor barrier. 4 SAN JIARCOS ENGINEERING, INC. civil soils foundations R.L.W. Construction Inc. Soils Report, cont'd... A soils engineer should inspect the foundation trench soils prior to footing concrete pour or - construction. This firm should be notified if soils different from the soils presented herein are found at site during the grading or footing construction 4 operations so that a proper evaluation and recommendations can be made. All surface water runoff should be directed away from the foundation system. For calculation of pole embedment, UBC standard parameters can be used. Assumption of. an allowable passive lateral preasaure of 100 psf/ft of depth is satisfactory. 5 SAN NARCOS ENGINEERING, INC. civil soils foundations R.L.W. Construction Inc. Soils Report, cont'd... &!i!i2!! of E!22t: This report, is based upon surficial and limited subsurface observations and logical projections inferred from observed conditions. Should conditions varying from those reported be found during development, a qualified soils engineer should inspect the site and evaluate the potential effect of our recommendations. , The report has been prepared in accordance with generally accepted soils and foundation engineering practice. No other warranties expressed or Implied are made as to the professional advice and recommendations contained. This report is provided for the exclusive use of the client or his authorized agents. If you have any question regarding this report, please call 744-0111 and mention Job #87029. Very truly yours, SAN 6 SAM MARCOS ENGINEERING, INC. civil soils foundations R.L.W. Construction Inc. Soilá Report, cont'd... Enclosures: Plate 1. Site & Location Map Appendix A. Recommended Earthwork Specifications Appendix B. Trench LogS. Laboratory Test Results Appendix C. Unified Soils Classification Distribution: (4) Addressee 7 APPENDIX A RECOMMENDED EARTHWORK SPECIFICATIONS APPENDIX A RECOMMENDED EARTHWORK SPECIFICATIONS Qgg& DESCRIPTION .. The objective is to obtain uniformity & adequate internal strength in filled ground by proven engineering procedures and teats so that the proposed structures May be safely supported. The procedures include clearing and grubbing, removal of existing structures, preparation of land to be filled, processing the fill soils, filling of the land, and the spreading and compaction of the filled areas to conform with the lines, grades, and slopes as shown on the approved plans. The owner shall retain a Civil Engineer qualified in Soil Mechanics (herein referred to as Engineer) to inspect and teat the filled ground as placed to verify the uniformity of compaction of filled ground to the specified 90 percent of maximum dry density. The Engineer shall advise the owner and grading contractor immediately if any unsatisfactory conditions are observed to exist and shall have the authority to reject the compacted filled ground until necessary corrective measures are taken to comply with the specifications. It shall be the sole responsibility of the grading contractor to achieve the specified degree of compaction. CLEARINGL qRM§§1MgL AND PREPARING AREAS 12 BE FILLED. (a) All brush, vegetation, and any biodegradable refuse shall be removed, piled, and burned or otherwise disposed of as to leave the areas to be filled free of vegetation and debris. Any uncompacted filled ground or loose compressible natural ground, shall be removed unless the report recommends otherwise. Any unstable, swampy, or otherwise unsuitable areas shall be corrected by draining or removal, or both. 1 SAN MARCOS ENGINEERING civil, foundations & soils The natural ground which is determined to be satisfactory for the support of the filled ground shall then be plowed or scarified to a depth of at least six inches (6"), and until the surface is free from ruts, hummocks, or other uneven features which would tend to prevent uniform compaction by the equipment to be used. After the natural ground has been prepared, it shall then be brought to the proper moisture content and compacted to not less than 90 percent of maximum density in accordance with the A.S.T.N. D1557-78 method which uses 25 blows of a 10 pound rammer falling 18 inches on each of 5 layers in a 4-inch diameter 1/30 cubic foot cylindrical sold. Where fills are made on hillsides or exposed slope areas, with gradients greater than 10 percent, horizontal benches shall be cut into firs undisturbed natural ground in order to provide both lateral and vertical stability. This is to provide a horizontal base so that each layer is placed and compacted on a horizontal plane. The initial bench at the toe of the fill shall be at least 10 feet in width on firs undisturbed natural ground .t the elevation of the toe stake placed at the natural angle of repose or design slope. The Engineer shall determine the width and frequency of all succeeding benches which will vary with the soil conditions and the steepness of slope. 3. MATERIALS AND SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS. The fill soils shall consist of select materials free from vegetable matter, and other deleterious substances, and shall not contain rocks or lumps greater than 6 inches in diameter. This may be obtained from the excavation of banks, borrow pits or any other approved sources and by mixing soils from one or more sources. If excessive vegetation, rocks, or soils with inadequate strength or other unacceptable physical characteristics are encountered, these shall be disposed of in waste areas as shown on the plans or as directed by the Engineer. If, during grading operations, soils are found which were not encountered and tested in the preliminary investigation, tests on these soils shall be performed to determine their physical characteristics. Any special treatment recommended in the preliminary or subsequent soil reports not covered herein shall become an addendum to these specifications. 2 SAN NARCOS ENGINEERING civil, foundations & soils 4. PLACINGL §RRE~PINgL When the moisture content of the fill Material is below that specified by the Engineer, water shall be added in the borrow pit until the Moisture content is near optimum to assure uniform Mixing and effective compaction. When the Moisture content of the fill material is above that specified by the Engineer, resulting in inadequate compaction or unstable fill, the fill material shall be aerated by blading and scarifying or other satisfactory methods until the moisture content is near optimum as specified. After processing, the suitable fill Material shall be placed in layers which, when compacted, shall not exceed six inches (6"). Each layer shall be spread evenly and shall be throughly Mixed during the spreading to ensure uniformity of Material and Moisture in each layer. After each layer has been placed, Mixed and spread evenly, it shall be throughly compacted to not less that the density act forth in paragraph 2(c) above. Compaction shall be accomplished with sheepsfoot rollers, multiple-wheel pneumatic-tired rollers, or other approved types of compaction equipment, such as vibratory equipment that is specially designed for certain soil types. Rollers shall be of such design and Maintained to such a level that they will be able to compact the fill Material to the specified density. Tamping feet of sheepsfoot rollers shall be Maintained such that the soil will be compacted rather than sheared by the roller. Rolling shall be accomplished while the fill. Material is at the specified Moisture content. Rolling of each layer shall be continuous over its entire area and the roller shall Make sufficient trips to insure that the specified density has been obtained. Rolling shall be accomplished in a planned procedure such that the entire area to be filled shall receive uniform coapactive effort. The surfaces of the fill slopes shall be compacted by means of aheepsfoot rollers or other suitable equipment. Compacting operations shall be continued until the slopes are stable and until there is no appreciable amount of loose soil on the slopes. Compacting of the slopes shall be SAN NARCOS ENGINEERING civil, foundations & soils accomplished by backrolling the slopes in increments of 3 to 5 feet in elevation gain or by other methods producing satisfactory results. Field density teats shall be taken for approximately each foot in elevation gain after compaction, but not to exceed two feet in vertical height between teats. Field density tests say be taken at intervals of 6 inches in elevation gain if required by the Engineer. The location of the teats in plan shall be so spaced to give the beat possible coverage and shall be taken no farther apart than 100 feet. Teats shall be taken on corner and terrace lots for each two feet in elevation gain. The Engineer may take additional teats as considered necessary to check on the uniformity of compaction. Where sheepsfoot rollers are used, the tests shall be taken in the compacted material below the disturbed surface. No additional layers of fill shall be spread until the field density tests indicate that the specified density has been obtained. The fill operation shall be continued in six inch (6') compacted layers as specified above, until the fill has been brought to the finished slopes and grades as shown on the accepted plans. Inap2gtj2a, Sufficient inspection by the Engineer shall be maintained during the filling and compacting operations so that he can verify that the fill was constructed in accordance with the accepted specifications. Seasonal Limits. No fill material shall be placed, spread, or rolled if weather conditions increase the moisture content above permissible limits. When the work is interrupted by rain, fill operations shall not be resumed until field tests by the soils engineer indicate that the moisture content and density of fill are as previously specified. Limiting YajHgs of N2!!!2!0i!! Soils. Those soils that expand 3.0 percent or less from air dry to saturation under a unit load of 150 pounds per square foot are considered to be nonexpansive.
