Tests Conducted
June 23, 1986
Test Location
The test was performed at 2141 Palomar Airport Road, Carlsbad, California.
The building is an existing Type III one-hour, completely sprinklered 35,000
sq. ft. office building containing one hydraulic elevator with center closing
doors. The building is three stories.
Test Method - All tests were designed and conducted by Pat Ryan of Pat
Ryan Consulting.
Test #1 - All elevator doors closed. One 30 second smoke bomb ignited at
1st floor lobby adjacent to elevator doors. Upon full discharge of 1st bomb
2 additional 30 second bombs were ignited. Test duration 12 minutes.
Test #2 -. 1st floor elevator doors opened to observe residual smoke from
test #1. Test duration 5 minutes. One 30 second bomb ignited with 1st floor
doors still, open. Test duration 12 minutes.
Test #3 - One 30 second bomb ignited on top of elevator cab in hoistway
with all elevator doors closed and all construction leaks (jams, floor call
button, transom) duct taped to insure test of brush installation only. Half
way through discharge the elevator cab was sent up the'hoistway to create a
"piston effect."

In Summary:
Test #1 - Total 3 30 second bombs. ignited with 1st floor lobby full of
smoke no smoke visible on any other floor. Hoistway vent observed discharging
smoke. *
Test #2 - Residual smoke from test #1 allowed to dissapate through open
cab at 1st floor. Smoke cleared in less than five minutes. No visible smoke
at other floors. After the one 30 second bomb was ignited minimal smoke was
observed at the 3rd floor lobby discharging through original construction
defects such as outside of jams, above and below transom and around floor call
button. One small leak was observed in the gasketing installation. Hoistway
vent observed discharging smoke.
Test -#3 - All construction leaks on third floor duct taped in order to
test the gasketing material exclusively. With the exception of the elevators
doors inadvertently opening at the beginning of the test only minimal smoke
discharged anywhere except through hoistway vent.
During all test the HVAC was in the normal position.
