PHONE BUILDING INSPECTOR CODE ENFORCEMENT OFFICER (10/30/2008) Peter Dreibelbis - TEXT htm _ '""/ "' ^ "" Page i" Hello Mr Foss, Thank you for taking the time to speak with me yesterday afternoon, regarding the concerns expressed on the electrical requirements specifically for Trane 5 ton condensing units using refrigerant R-410a My position is technical support, and I hope to clarify a frequent question with regard to MOCP relating to residential HVAC units To recap, this is regarding the maximum overcurrent protection is.sue on the Trane model # 4TTX5060A1000A condensing unit installed at the residence of Mi Mickey Geller, 2165 Corte Acebo, Carlsbad, CA, by Major League Heating and Air Conditioning, based in Vista The permit # is CB081607 The condensing unit minimum and maximum valuer are posted as the same, at 60 A, with a minimum circuit ampacity at 36 A My understanding is there is an 8 AWG wire between the circuit breaker panel and the condensing unit disconnect Assuming the wire insulation is such that this wire is rated for 50 amperes of current, this satisfies the MCA of 36 (See attached "Service Facts" which are included in every Trane unit manufactured This provides the technical specifics needed for the installer and service technician) See also the attached NEC Table 310 16 I believe the impasse here is how there can be a 60A circuit breaker can be permissible using a wire which is only rated for 50 A According to the 2005 NEC Article 440 22 "Rating or Setting for Individual Motor-Compressor The motor-compressor branch-circuit short- circuit and ground-fault protective device shall be capable of carrying the starting current of the motor A protective device having a rating or setting not exceeding 175 percent of the motor- compressor rated-load current or branch-circuit selection current, whichever is greater, shall be permitted, provided that, where the protection specified is not sufficient for the starting current of the motor, the rating or setting shall be permitted to be increased but shall not exceed 225 percent of the motor rated-load current or branch-circuit selection current, whichever is greater" An interpretation of this is the breaker, providing it will not open under normal starting conditions may be sized not greater that 175 % of the electrical load, however, if the compressor will experience nuisance trips, (determined by all HVAC manufacturers ) the breaker may be increased to as high as 225 % of the electrical load Furthermore, if the calculated number matches that of a non-common breaker, Trane will calculate the risks of nuisance trips by using a common size breaker If it will work under normal operation, Trane will typically show this as being "MIN " breaker size Case in point The unit at the Geller residence is a Trane model 4TTX5060A1000A The attached "Service Facts" state the compressor RLA @ 26 4 A, condenser fan @ 2 8 A (10/30/2008) Peter Dreibelbis - TEXT htm ' ": '.7.ZIIZ.- Page 2 I MCA calculation- Using the compressor RLA, 26 4, and multiply by 1 25 = 33 0 A Add the fan motor amperage (2 8 A) for the sum of 35 8 A, or 36 A as the MCA The wire gauge from the panel to the disconnect shall not have an ampacity less than this value II WlIN / MAX calculation- Please refer to the underlined text above for this example Using the compressor RLA, 26 4, multiply by 1 75 (175%) = 46 20 A Add the condenser fan amperage (2 8 A) for the sum of 49 0 A The calculation would appear to offer a 50A breaker, however Trane implies by not listing a 50 A "MIN" that use of such could lead to this nuisance condition Therefore, using " the rating or setting shall be permitted to be increased but shall not exceed 225% " that is, compressor RLA 26 4 A X 2 25 (225%) = 59 4 A Add the condenser fan once again and we are at the MAX of a 60A circuit breaker (Refer back to the underlined above ) This is why the MIN/MAX are listed as the same, 60A, with a MCA at 36 A A key point here which should be emphasized is that the compressor is internally protected If the compressor were to experience an overcurrent condition, other than a direct winding short or short to ground, it is likely to cycle upon it's own internal overload prior to tripping the circuit breaker If there were no internal overload protection, then I would readily agree that a 60A breaker is not suitable for a 50A service Too, if the MIN 60A rating were to cause the MCA to be increased, it would bo reflected in the product specifications In conclusion, a gauge wire capable of sustaining 50 amperes of current should be permissible with the 60 A overcurrent protection, according to interpretation of the NEC Article Thank you for your time and attention, and please let me know your decision as Major League Heating & Air Conditioning is stating the permit is not finalized due to this very concern Smce'rely, Wayne DeCosa Trane FSR Ferguson Heating & Cooling, Inc Wolseley North American Division (10/30/2008) Peter Dreibelbis -
