You are hereby notified that in addition to the inspection of construction provided by the
Building Department, an approved Registered Special Inspector is required to provide continuous
inspection during the perfonnance of the phases of construction indicated on the reverse side of
this sheet.

The Registered Special Inspector shall be l:1pproved by the City of Carlsbad Building
Department prior to the issuance of the building pennit. Special Inspectors having a
current certification from the City of San Diego, Los Angeles, or ICBO ai:e approved as
Special Inspectors for the type of construction for which they are certified.
The inspections by a Special lnspe<:tor do not change the requirements for inspections by
personnel of the City of Carlsbad building department. The inspections by a Special
Inspector are in addition to the inspections,nomially required by the County Building
Code. ·
The Special Inspector is not authorized to inspect and approve any work other than that for which
he/she is specifically assigned to inspect. The Special Inspector is not authorized to accept
alternate materials, structural changes, or any requests for plan changes. The Special Inspector is
required to submit written reports to the City of Carlsbad building department of all work that
he/she inspected and approved. The final inspection approval will not be given until all Special
Inspection reports have been received and approved by the City of Carlsbad building department.
Please submit the names of the inspectors who will perform the special inspections on each of the
items indicated· on the reverse side of thi$ ~heet.

The press weights,~25, 1·00 lbo/(fully assembled). The adjacent tank (Hydraulic Power Unit) Weight is insignificant
compared to the pr~s,mcF\vill be thru bolted to the bottom of the pit (no special anchoring required). We don't
have pictures yet, but expect them in a day or so. Once-we have the pictures, we'll forward them to you.
Any idea how long this will take to complete the design?

The previously sent drawings were from the manufacturer (French) of the press. These drawings
include our placement. of the pit in HQ and how Top Flite designed their pit. We want out pit just
like Top Flite's with the exception of a 16' inside width (side to side).

Andrew & Chung,
The previously sent drawings were from the manufacturer (French) of the press. These drawings include our
placement of the pit in HQ and how Top Flite designed their pit. We want out pit just like Top Flite's with the
exception of a 16' inside width ( side to side).
Do the previous drawings have enough info to add to these to begin design?

I do not know the weights but each mold half is 24" X 24" and 1.5" thick the molds are made of steel. To operate
you need 2 mold half's to operate. I think they should be able to get close with the weights with this info.
The operation of the press is very slow all the movement is from the three Hydraulic cylinders on the bottom of
the press. There are 2 smaller cylinders (Low Pressure) that move the big cylinder all the way to top half of the
mold cavities. The big cylinder (High Pressure) will then actuate. After about 20 seconds of high pressure the
press will open up approximately 0.5" to release any trapped air that may have been captured in the first closure.
The press will then close again at High pressure for a period of time then the press will open completely to
complete the core mold process.

Thank you for the prompt reply.
Per our phone conversation, the weight of the machine is· 25,100 lbs, and the machine operating does not cause
additional dynamic forces, or rotational forces, or uplift at the base. We will do our foundation design for a center
of gravity 52" + 2". (for customer tooling)= 54"
Another question, can we assume the steel ring at the base of the machine distributes the load uniformly to the
foundation?
That's all we have for now, I'll call you if we have any further questions

Please give us some input what this machine will be use for, so the maximum weight of molds and tooling can
be estimated? What about Minimum thickness of tooling/molding?

floor. The dimension from the base of the press to the center of gravity is approximately 47.5". This does
not take into affect any tool/mold weights, which are unknown from my siqe.
The press does move and is not always in the idle state. I have to assume the tool will be as thin as 4"
thick. The press opening is 19". Therefore the machine will stroke upward 15". This moves the center of
gravity up. The resultant center of gravity from this action is now 52" from the base. I believe this is what
you will want to use when calculating the seismic loading.
To be safe you will have to move it up another few inches once you add the weight of the customer
supplied tooling. •

Yes, the base of our press is a ring, with the OD= 39.25" and ID= 30.25". Contact area is 492 sq in and
pressure works out to be 51 psi.

Attached are original press drawings for e single deck presses. The base ring is shown on sheet 2, and the OD
is 39.25" and ID is 30.25".

Sheet 2 also shows trench depth at 29 inches. This is the same depth as the trench for the double deck presses,
but there were external pneumatic cylinders required to bring the lower spike plate up to operator work height,
· and to bring the upper spike plate down to operator work height (see sheets 1-3 of the manual operation pdf file
sent earlier). Since you're only working from one deck height you may be able to modify the trench depth so the
external lift cylinder is not needed.

Thank you Mark for the pictures we noticed that the base is different than depicted in our drawings. The drawings
show a 4X4 solid base the actual base in the picture shows a steel ring. If at all possible can you please measure
the inside and outside radius on the base this Will get out engineer the total contact area the base. actually has
supporting the press. Thank again for all your help.
