to 257, inclusive La Costa South Unit No 3 San Diego County, California Gentlemen This is to report the results of tests and observations made in order to inspect the compaction of filled ground placed on certain areas of Lots 207 to 237, inclusive, 239, 243, 246 to 248, inclusive, 250 and 251, and 255 to 257, inclusive, of La Costa South Unit No 3, San Diego County, California The fills were placed during the period between October 20 and December 5, 1969 The approximate areas and depths of filled ground placed under our inspection in accordance with the approved specifications are shown on the attached Drawing No 1, entitled "Location of Compacted Filled Ground " The grading plan used for the placement of filled ground was prepared by Rick Engineering Company and dated September 30, 1969 The approximate locations at which the tests were taken and the final test results are presented on pages 4 to 10, inclusive, under the "Table of Test Results " The laboratory determinations of the maximum dry densities and optimum moisture contents of the major fill materials are presented on page 10, under the "Laboratory Test Results " Some of the maximum dry densities shown in the "Table of Test Results" were combinations of these The tests were taken during the weekly periods indicated below Test Number land 2 3 to 59, inclusive 60 to 123, inclusive 124 to 168, inclusive 169 to 197, inclusive 198 to 213, inclusive 214 to 244, inclusive Week Ending October 25, 1969 November 1, 1969 November 8, 1969 November 15, 1969 November 22, 1969 November 29, 1969 December 6, 1969 Project No 69-10-25D -2- January 16, 1970 La Costa South Unit No 3 The final results of tests and observations indicate that the compacted filled ground has been placed at 90 percent of the maximum dry density or greater It has been determined that the fill materials, compacted to 90 percent of the maximum dry density, have a safe bearing value of at least 2000 pounds per square foot for one foot wide continuous footings founded at a minimum depth and placed five feet or more inside the top of compacted filled ground slopes If footings are placed closer to the exposed slopes than 5 feet inside the top of compacted filled ground slopes, these should be deepened one foot below a 1 1/2 horizontal to 1 vertical line projected outward and downward from a point 5 feet horizontally inside the top of compacted filled ground slopes Tests indicate that the compacted filled ground is adequate to satisfac- torily support one or two story wood frame dwellings designed for the recommended boring value, without detrimental settlements In our report of the original investigation conducted at this subdivision, (Project No 69-3-24BC dated May 22, 1969), we stated that some "expansive" soils existed on the site and if they were allowed to remain in the upper 3 feet below finished grade some of the lots would require specially designed footings and slabs We further stated that these lots would be listed upon the completion of grading The lots where expansive soils were observed to remain within the upper 3 feet, are tabulated as follows Type A Lots 219, 220, 250 and 251 Type B Lots 221 to 224, inclusive, 226, 229, 231 and 232, and 248 and 249 It is recommended that the following special design precautions be taken for the houses to be constructed on the above-listed lots Type A Lots 1 Isolated interior piers should not be used Continuous footings should be used throughout, and these should be placed at a minimum depth of two feet below the lowest adjacent exterior final ground surface 2 Reinforce and interconnect continuously with steel bars all interior and exterior footings with two ^4 bars at 3 inches above the bottom of all footings and two *4 bars placed 1 1/2 inches below the top of the stems of the footings 3 Use raised wood floors that span between continuous footings, or reinforce all concrete slabs with 6x6- 10/10 woven wire fabric and privide a minimum of 4 inches of clean sand beneath all concrete slabs Provide a moisture barrier 2 inches below slabs under living areas 4 Separate garage slabs from perimeter footings by 1/2 inch thickness of construc- tion felt or equivalent, to allow independent movement of garage slabs relative to perimeter footings 5 Provide positive drainage away from all perimeter footings to a horizontal distance of at least 6 feet outside the house walls BENTON ENGINEERING INC Project No 69-10-25D -3- January 16, 1970 La Costa South Unit No 3 Type B Lots Those lots listed on page 2 as Type B lots should follow all the above-listed recommendations with the two following exceptions 1 The continuous footings may be placed at a minimum depth of 18 inches below the lowest adjacent exterior final ground surface rather than the two feet recommended for Type A lots 2 Single ^4 bars placed as directed (above) near tops and bottoms of all interior and exterior footings may be substituted for the two *4 bars recommended for Type A lots Recommendations 3 to 5, inclusive, as listed for Type A lots, are applicable to the Type B lots also Respectfully submitted, BENTON ENGINEERING, INC .
