I Summary of Site Activities: I I
The existing Chase bank building located at the site is proposing to modify the existing exterior ramp area
on the south exit to infill an area in front of the ATM machines with a small step. The new infill will
consist of Styrofoam covered with 3" max lightweight concrete. The bank is located above a two story
basement level/parking structure that is below grade.
Field observations revealed the following:
The existing floor framing is comprised of poured in place concrete slab (See Photo 1) supported
by concrete girders, concrete purlins, round concrete columns and concrete exterior walls. The
concrete girders are approximately .18" wide, 30" below bottom of slab and span approximately
26'-0". The girders bear on 18" diameter concrete columns that are approximately 9'-6" tall.
Perpendicular to the girder span are 14" wide, 21" below bottom of slab purlins spaced
approximately 14'-6" on center and spanning approximately 29'-6". The walls are cast-in-place
concrete and the thickness could not be determined by visual inspection. The area of the floor
where the units will be placed is approximately 24" thick concrete slab that spans from purlin to
purlin (See Photo 2). An additional purlin line is placed approximately 6'-6" from the edge of
building to support the current ramp and planter area.
The existing ramp and planter area outside consists of approximately 6" of normal weight concrete
infill (See Photo 3).
As-built drawings of the existing structure were not available
Conclusions and Recommendations
It will be feasible to modify the ramp area and infill the area in front of the existing ATM
machines without adding support below. Since the current construction is designed to support 6"
of normal weight concrete and the new layout will only be using 3". of lightweight concrete, the
current design can be justified by using Chapter34 of The California Building Code. The new
concrete ramp and infill weight will not exceed 5% of the original design loads of the slab. The
ramp area and step/infill will need to be structurally detailed so that it is anchored into the existing
slab correctly.
