I have prepared the attached package of information for submittal to the Building Department
in -order to obtain a miscellaneous mechanical permit for replacement of flues. This submittal
approach was previously discussed with Tim Phillips. ·
.Attached are the following documents:
1. CH&A Test Report of existing furnace output.
2. Letter from-Engineer of Record.indicating acceptance.of proposed flue, based upon test
report information.
3. . Installation detail -Note that a 2• clearance to combustible material as required per U.L.
... _ -listing MH7076(N) (for flues unc;fer 1 a• diameter), is maintained with use of thimble at
· roof.
4. Information on replacement flue.

Pursuan~ to your req~est CH&A Cprporatlon has performed an evaluation of the referenced gas
furnace flue system. :The purpose of the evaluation was to result in a recommendation· of a safe
flue sys~m. ·

Mr. l.4ry Dougherty of ,CH&A Corporation inspected the installation and installed a
temperature data logger on the two operating flues for t~O adjacent furnaces.
Data w~ recorded on two different dperation settings for the two furnaces. One furnace,
channel i, was operated as installedt op~rating at 100% burner output during weekly startup and
temperatute maintenance. The second; furnace, channel 1 was limited to 65 % burner output
during iriitial startup and temper~ture m~intenance. The fire attached data display the operation
temperature during the last set of tests. iNote that the data from previous test have been omitted
due to a :,large amount of noise present that voi_ded the results.

The approxim:are mean ·operating remper~ture at I 00 % burner operation was 600 ° F. _and_aL65. %
bumer-op-eration was 4~XJ0r: ·The temp;erature fluctuations within £he flue where measured was
reduced rrorn a delta temperature of approximately 440° F. to 200° F, without affecting the
output performance of the furnace.· The startup temperature at l00% was 1040° F and at 65 %
was 820~ F. ·

revealed : accelerated ·deterioration· due· to the operating temperature, thereby significantly
compromising the expectant flue life. . .. ·

Consulting with metallurgists on the proper type of flue metal to use, CH&A Corporation does
not recommend the 'high cost ceramic. flue systems available on the market and discussed at
meeting with Calloway personnel. The operating temperarure illustrated on the attached charts
will not have adverse affects on chrome-moly'steel or'stainless steeL The'd1rome-inoly should
contain l 1/2 to 5 % chromium and 1/2 % molybdenum. The stainless steel such as 304 could be
used.
In conclusion, it is the opinion of CH&A Corporation that the operation of the existing furnaces
within the Calloway 'Golf manufacruring plant are safe and do not create an extraordinary fire
hazard. The existing flue shows accelerated deterioration that is not a hazard at this time. The
proper flue material 'tO be used for the anticipated life of the furnace should be chrome-moly
steel as · described above or s~inless ste~l with adequate insulation to the roof and proper
physical-space separation from wooden ·b.uilding materials.

We have received a report prepared by CH&A on temperature readings obtained from the
furnaces at the above-referenced project.
There have. been numerous problems associated with obtaining this information and I do
apologize for tlie elapsed. time in g~tting you this information.

The results have been discussed with Callaway Golf and although the recommendation in the
report is for a stainless steel flue to resist the 1,040°F maximum temperature, Callaway Golf
wishes to use a ceramic lined flue for an extra safety factor.
The proposed flue is manufactured by Van Packer and is Model HT, which is rated up to
1,800°F continuous and 2,000°F intermittent. I believe information was previously submitted to
the Building Department on these flues, but contact me if you should require additional
information.
We are asking for your review of the .proposed solution before commencing with any work.

Mr. Lalfry Dougherty of .CH&A Co~oration inspected the installation and installed a
temperat~re· data logger on ·tne two operating flues for t~o adjacent furnaces.
Data w~ recorded on two. different ,_operation settings for the two furnaces. One furnace,
channel i, was operated as it1$talled, operating at 100% burner output during weekly startup and
temperathre; maintenance. The second furnace, chann~l 1 was limited to 65 % burner output
during iriitial startup and temperatilre maintenance. The· fire attached data display the operation
temperature during the last set of tests. Note that the data.from previous test have been omitted
due to a :)arge amount of noise present that voided the results.
The approximate me.an ·operating temperature at 1.00 % burner operation was 600 ° F. and ar 65 %
burner operation was 49(}° F. The temperature fluctuations within Ihe flue. where measured was
reduced rrom a d~lta temperature of approximately 440° F. to 200 6 F, without affecting the
output performance of the furnace.· The startup temperature at 100 % was I 040 ° F and at 65 %
was 820~ F. ·
Physical ·inspection of the standard weight carbon steel flue pipes that are currently ·installed
revealed : accelerated · deterioration· due to the operating temperature, thereby significantly
compromising the expectant flue life.

Consulting with metallurgists on the proper type of flue metal to use, CH&A Corpor~tion does
not recdmmend the 'high cost .ceramic flue systems available on the market and discussed at
meeting with Calloway personnel. _The operating temperarure__ illustrated on the attached charts
will not have _adverse affects on chrome-moly $tee! or ·stainless" steel. The chrome-rnoly should
contain 11/2 to 5 % chromium and 1/2 % molybdenum. -The stainless steel such as 304 could be
used.
In conclusion, it is tlie opinion of CH&A Corporation that the operation of the existing. furnaces
within the Calloway 'Golf manufacturing plant are safe and do not create an extraordinary fire
h~rd. The existing tiue shows accelerated deterioration that is not a hazard at this time. The
proper flue material ·to be used for the anticipated life of the furnace should be chrome-moly
Steel as -described above Or -stainless Steel with adequate insulation to the roof and proper
physical.space separation from wooden building materials.
