Designed to provide a highly reliable. cost effecti11e. modular approach to total flooding and local applications. Automatic or System. Operation Pyre-Chem , .. industrial dry chemical fire extinguishing systems have been designed for highly reliable response in a variety of hazard condi- tions with the versatility of automatic or manual actuation-a choi~ of fusible link on electri.;; thermostat detection -single or tandem cylinder coverage -the system provides efficient. cost effective protection tl'le moment a fire is detected. Once initiated. the pressurized dry chemical extinguishing agent cylinder expels the fl'lterChemw dry chemical sstect· ed for the application through a pre-engineered piping network and out Application Data Authorized Pyro Chem pre-engineered system distributors can pr~re a hazard survey to determine the appropriate fire fighting agent to be used and which type of extinguishing rnethod is applicable. Pyro-Chem indus- trial dry chemical extinguishing systems are designed for use on fires classified A. B and C by National Fire Protection Association criteria. The classification of each type of fire is: CLASS A: Fires in ordinary combustible materials. such as wood. cloth, paper. rubber and many plastics. CLASS B: Fires in flammable liquids. gases and greases. CLASS C: fires which involve energized electrical equipment where the eleetrical nonconauctivity of the extingu~hing media is of importance. Pyro·Chern"" industrial SyStems utilize stearated sodium bicarbonate for class Band C fires and monammonium phosphate based "multi- purpose" d,y chemical for use on all three classifications of fires (A. 8. and C). Pyro Chem provides two types of industrial dry chemical systems as defined by N.F.P.A. No. 17, "Ory Chemical Extinguishing Systems" which include either ''total flooding'' or "local application" coverage. "TOTAL FLOODING" provides that dry chemical be discharged into an · enclosed space or enclosure in which the hazard is located. It is im· portant that the total unclosable openings in the sides, top and bottom of the enclosure not exceed 15% of the total area because this method of protectiqn/extinguishment relies on establishing an adequate concentra- tion ofagent. Class A. 8 and C or Class Band C hazards can be protected. NOTE; Per N.F.P.A, No. 17:~3.4. l .. Unclosable opsnings having areas in excess of 1 perc;ent of the total area of the $ides, top and bottom of the enclosure. and not exceeding S percent, shall be compensated for by the use Qf supplemental dry cilemical in tl'le·proportions of not less than 0,5 lb. persQ. ft, (2,44.kg/m2) of unenc;losed·opening. applied through the regular distribution system. When tha unclosable openings have manual system activation releases an effective surge of Pyro-Chem • diy chemical agent in a pattern U.L. listed and F.M. approved to quickly blanket protected areas and extinguish flames, the discharge noizles. The dry-chemical discharge pattern is maintained for a duration of time to insure extinguishment and Inhibit reignition. Standard options are available to provide remote manual activation. gas equipment shutdown. electrical power interrupt. reserve cylinder back~ up. and supervised remote alarm/trouble annunciation. This optional equipment will enhance the basic system tunctions to be applicable when designing custom con1iguratioris to suit a particular customer's needs and/or comply with local codes, •' : • ,:'' '" .•:, • ,::: :._ •,:f' o ,~( • • ,•' • '•• : • ', •,,•: • ... ~, Y,~ • ! ;: '::cvuNDER CONTROLflEAD; CYUHDER AND VALVE ASSEMBLY '·'! l'.:)'.lt~1[~:j·':'· -~~ •,,::: . Pyro-Chem industrial diy chemical systems are U.L. listed and F.M. approved with two types of thermal detection •.• fusible link (mechanical input) and thermostats (electrical input). Fusible link detectors respond to a fixed rating temperature and are stamped with the appropriate rating for easy identification. However: the temperature at which a link becomes responsive-HEJ:posure Tempera- ture" -must also be considered when designing a detection system with fusible links. The exposure temperature is less than the "rating" temper- ature and-links exposed to this temperature over a period of time can release even though the ambient temperatures to which it is exposed never reaches the rating temperature. To minimize the probability of false dlseharge a temperature survey should be part of the hazard survey. Pyro Chem's control head can accommodate as many as 15 fusible link detectors. Thermostats (electric thermal detectors) respond to a fixed temperature. When the "rated" temperature at the detector is reached a normally open contact is closed initiating an alarm condition on the cylinder eontrol head Typical System Configurations (rnodel ECH) solenoid circuit which in tllrn actuates the dry cllemical extinguishing system. The detectors are self ·resetting after operation and are available in a variety of temperature ratings from 140°Fto 600QF. They are shock and. corrosion resistant. Electrically. any number of thermostats can be used in a circuit. The limit is only subject to the praai- cal considerations of job conditions and engineering judgement. Underwriters Laboratories. Inc. reeommends the thennal detection be used to protect a maximum of 2,500 square feet; however. closer 5Pac- ing to provi~e faster responses ls often desirable. NOTE: Pyro Chem·s !!election of thermal detei;tors is based ontypi~ environ- mental conditions surrounding a hazard which could i;ompromise the $ensitislity of 0 0ptical" detectors; however, any IJndetWriters Laboratories listed and Factory Mutual Approved fire detection system may be used providing proper interface is made wilf'I the deteaitm system and Pyro Chem·s industrial dry chemical extingulslling system and it is in compliance with local codes. The chemical list for the Flammable Chemical Storage Building #3 has been revised and the hydrogen chloride gas has been deleted from the list. Ammonia gas is a considered a corrosive because it is a strong base and is a caustic to skin but is not a corrosive of metal . or glass and will not affect the other chemical containers. Flammable Chemical Storage Buildings #1 and #2 have a 500 gallon minimum secondary containment and Flammable Chemical Storage Building #3 has a 250 gallon minimum secondary containment. The largest chemical container is 55 gallons and these containers exist only in the Flammable Chemical Storage Building #2.
