00,000), the required area is 0.8 sq in., and the required section
s. 9.1. A 2 x 8 rafter is still required.
RAFTER, AND CEILING—JOIST
CONNECTIONS
Rafter connections Rafter connections in the light framing
of housing have become more or less standardized by carpenters
s of a certain number and size of nail. Such a practice disregards
gn standards applied to other types of framing, such as trussed
which are also *idely used in housing and for small-span build -
[though there is no intention to question the adequacy of arbi.
ailing practices, it is inconsistent to engineer a trussed-rafter
d not to do likewise with a conventional rafter roof.
e example of Sec. 7.41, the thrust of the rafter amounts to 768 lb.
nails are used, which is an average number, there will he a load
Lb per nail. This is considerably more than twice the load per
rmitted on an engineering basis for lOd to 16d nails, the sizes
ly used.
ñbination of factors apparently assist the otherwise inadequate
onnections in small structures. The engineering design load sd.
ever, occurs. Most building codes require live roof loads in snow
at are equivalent to from 30 to 40 in. of snow. Diaphragm
Df the roof, and possibly of the ceiling, is probably effective in
Ting the thrust along the wall until it may be resisted by the
on of end walls and interior cross walls (see Sec. 7.27-7.32).
:iffness and cantilever resistance is also provided by masonry and
ide walls.
nigh arbitrary nailing practice may be satisfactory for small
res, the designer should consider the possible need for more than
nailing if rafter spans are long, roof slope is low, .cross walls
lely spaced, or if diaphragm action or rigidity of the roof is
nable.
Ceiling—joist connections Similar comments to those for
apply to ceiling—joist connections. that act as tie members for
ers. The tension in such ceiling joists resulting from the rafter
nay need special consideration, particularly if a large number
s are cut, as for a stairway. Diaphragm action of flooring or
material apparently helps in average house framing to transfer
sion to adjacent joists that are continuous.
HIP RAFTERS
7.44 Hip rafters Hip rafters, like collar beams, are indeterminate,
iinly to a greater extent. It is not well known how much of a hip-roof
load is carried by arch action and how much by action of the hip rafter
t% a simple beam supported at the wall and at the peak. The distribu-
tion seems incapable of exact determination, although there is little
(f'nlbt that both arch and beam action contribute to the strength.
If experience is consulted, it seems reasonably safe to assume that,
I.' r normal spans and slopes of 4:12 or higher, the hip rafter will carry
uily a small load acting as a simple beam, provided it is a single-length
member. Most of the load is probably carried by arch action, providing
there is proper tie in at least one direction, usually by ceiling joists,
IcLween the ends of the jack rafters.
If there were complete arch action, the hip rafter would serve merely
a framing point for the jack rafters and theoretically would be un-
necessary after the roof sheathing is placed. A minimum, arbitrarily
recommended size for hip rafters is at least one size larger in depth
than the jack rafters and preferably iwo sizes, As a hip rafter is more
likely to act as a simple beam on lower slopes and longer spans, larger
or doubled hip rafters may be desirable for these conditions. The
choice must be based on the designer's judgment and experience.
7.45 Peak loading If the hip rafter frames to an independent
structural unit such as a truss or trussed rafter at the peak, a concen-
trated load should be considered as introduced into the analysis by the :
possible beam action of the hip rafter. For the small-span construction
typical of housing, it is sometimes arbitrarily assumed that 50 per cent
of the hip-roof load is carried by the hip rafter. The resultant reaction
of the hip rafter at the peak is then used in the design of the structural
element or truss at the peak. .Figure 7.20 shows a 45-deg hip rafter
calculated for the with 13-ft' rafters and 40-lb load (50 per cent of load
considered in bending, neglecting direct stress). A 2 x 12 hip rafter
and 2 x 8 jack rafters will be required if it is assumed that 50 per cent
of the load is carried by beam action.
7.46 Valley rafters Valley rafters have triangular loading con-
ditions similar to those found in hip rafters, except that the loading
increases toward the outer wall or support rather than toward the
ridge. Unlike hip rafters, however, valley rafters receive no relief be-
cause of arch action and must therefore be designed as inclined beams.

the property to be served. The total charges must be paid to the District at the
time the appljcation is submitted.
' If a seriice lateral is requid, it will be installed by the Leucadia County Water
District. The service lateral is that, part of the sewer system that extends from
the main collection line in the street (or easement) to the point in the street (at
or near the applicant's property line) where the service lateral is connected to
the applicant's building sewer. The applicant is responsible for the'construction,
at the applicant's expense, of the sewer pipeline (building sewer) from the appli-
cant'!'pumbing to the point •inthestreet (or easement) where a connection, is mad
to the service lateral.
The connection of the applicant's building sewer to the service lateral shall be
made "bY the applicant..at his expense. The connection must be made in conformity
with the District's specificatiops, rules and regulations; and IT MUST BE INSPECTED
AND APPROVED BY THE DISTRICT BEFORE THE SEWER SYSTEM MAY BE USED BY THE APPLICANT.

TION LINE WITHOUT PRIOR APPROVAL AND INSPECTION BY THE DISTRICT WILL BE CONSIDERED
INVALID AND WILL NOT BE ACKNOWLEDGED.
The prnratd sewer service fee is based upon the date the District estimates that
service will begin and covers the balance of the fiscal year. There will be no
additional fee or refund if service actually commences on a different date. For
