II Description General The galvanized decks are formed from ASTM
A 446 Grade C steel The galvanized coating must conform to ASTM A
525 The decks are fluted sections as shown in Figure No I and arc
available in thicknesses noted in Table No I
All decks are welded to supporting elements using E60 or E70 rods with a
minimum size of'/«inch Arc seam welds must be a minimum of 1'/; inches
in length See Figure No I for details Arc spot (puddle) welds must have a
minimum fusion area to supporting members of not less than J/«-mch by 1-
inch oblong or V:-mch round Prior to welding the welder must demon
suite his ability to produce the prescribed welds to the satisfaction of the
special welding inspector See Figure No 2 for end weld pauerns
Allowable Loads Allowable vertical loads for steel decks without con
crete fill must be calculated using the section properties shown in Table No
I End and intermediate reactions for steel decks without concrete fill arc
limited 10 allowable values shown in Table No II Allowable superimposed
loads for steel decks wuh concrete fill are noted in Tables Nos VIII X
Allowable diaphragm shears and flexibility factors are show n in the accom
panymg tables
Allowable vertical loads for steel decks with Zonolitc Insulperm fill must
be calculated using the section properties shown in Table No I of the master
- report End and intermediate reactions for steel decks with Zonolite Insul-
perm fill are limited unallowable values in Table No II
Steel Decks with Concrete Fill The steel decks described in ihis report
may be filled with normal rock or expanded shale aggregate concreie
having a minimum ultimate compressivc strength of 3000 psi Concrete
must be a minimum of 2 inches thick above the surface of the deck A
minimum mesh of 6 x 6 Wl 4 X Wl 4 u elded wire mesh must be placed
approximately 1 inch below ihe top of fill in all decks If fill exceeds 3'/<
inches o\cr the lop of ihe deck mesh must be used w ith an area m square
inches per foot equal to 01 times the depth of the fill over the lop of ihe
deck.
Composite sections should not be used for loads w hich are predominately
vibratory
Deck thicknesses in the tables are the nominal base metal thickness used
in design The concrete thickness in the tables is the total depth including the
depth of Ihe deck section
The tables give one two or three span conditions for construction
loading with maximum spans to be used without midspan shonng and the
allowable superimposed loads based on a simple span condition for com-
posite behavior The determination of shonng limits are based on the
strength of (he deck section using a construction uniform live load of 20 psf
or a concentrated live load of 150 pounds applied at midspan The shonng
requirements are also determined using a deflection limit of the span
.divided by 180 but not to exceed V< inch when the deck is loaded with
construction dead load only The construction dead load is assumed as a
uniform load over the length of the deck element One row of shonng is
required at midspan for values to the nght of the heavy line in dx load
tables - ' ' :?*&«(*-
- The dead load on the deck includes the weight of nominal concrete ?-
thjckness plus 3 psf for normal concrete slabs and 2 psf for lightweight
concrete slabs to account for the concrete deposited as a result of the "
deflection of the deck .during the pounng sequence, but no allowance u
made for weight resulting from the deflection of supporting framing mem-

Welding details are similar to those noted above and in the general no
for ihe tables Seam attachment spacing and weld pattern requirements
noted in Table No V
Fillet welds must be made with a '/i inch rod and must be used lo conn
the lop flute element at lapped end splices (when required) and to conn
the ATLAS L restramcr angle as noied in Figure No 4 Allowable d
phragm values are noicd in Table No V
The ends of deck must be either end lapped with continuing deck ur
using minimum 2'/_ inch end lap or must be restrained by a ATLAi
restraint as shown in Figure No 4 The lop flute at an end lap may or may
be welded dcocndmg on the shear or stiffness requirements of the c
phragm as noted in Table No V
Steel Decks Covered with Zonolite Insulperm Fill The roof c
phmgm construction consists of 36-inch wide LXR-B Veatline steel par
described in this report welded to ihe support framing with the panel e
restrained by the Atlas System as described in the master report, except
lop flute element at lapped end splices must be fastened with fillet we:
The steel deck is covered with a Zonolite concrete slurry leveled to a Y«-i
thickness over the flutes Insulperm board is firmly sealed and leveled
the slurry surface before initial set occurs, with board slots at right angle
the deck span end joints staggered and all joints butted snugly A 2-i;
minimum thickness of Zonolite concrete is laid immediately and screede*
a level even surface to receive built-up roofing A maximum of 30 mini

.r, RACKING LOAD TEST;
SAMPLES
Three samples of the vail system were tested. c«v-h a amp I*
was 8 ft high and 8 ft wide and was paneled with gypsum wallboard
on one side. The gypsum wallboard panels were fastened to 2 by
3 in. (nominal) end and joint studs and 1 by 3 in. (nominal) top
and bottom plates and intermediate studs spaced at 16 in. OC as
indicated in Fig. 1. The lumber was identified as "Stud" grade.
S-P-F specie. The studs were fastened bo the top and bottom
plato* wit-h two 8 d nails at each end of the studs.
The Mortell C937 adhesive was applied on the studs and the
top and bottom plates in a continuous bead approximately 3/8 in.
diameter. On the center stud, where the sheets of wallboard butt
together, two beads of adhesive were applied. The staples were
spaced at 6 in. OC along the top and bottom plates (staple crowns
parallel) and 6 in. OC at end studs and joint stud (two staples
side by side at butt ;joint) and 12 in. OC along the length of
each intermediate stud,, with staple crowns parallel and * minimum
of 3/8 in. from edges. Staple fastening was only used to insure
permanent adhesive bond of panels to the frame.
METHOD
Test Apparatus - See Pig, 2, The test panels w«re attached
to a steel channel with two steel bolts. A hold-down was
provided to prevent the loaded side from rising. Steel plates
and rollers were provided between the sample and the hold-down so
that the sample could deflect horizontally. The nuts on the
steel rods which tension the hold-down were tightened to
apptoxioately 50 in.-lb with a torque wrench. A 4 by 4 in.
{nominal 90 by 90 mm) timber was bolted to the top plate of the

each reading, the load was returned to the last previous load and
the loading was continued at 400 Ib/min. After the 2400 Ib
residual reading, the loading was continued in 400 Ib/min
increments. Deflective readings were taken after each 400 Ib—J 'nrrmnent was reached. Loading was continued to ultimateload
failure.
