CONGER ENGINEERING
September 18, 1984
City of Carlsbad Building Dept.
1200 Elm
Carlsbad, CA 92008
Attention: Mr. Mer Camero
SUBJECT: Palomar Airport Office Park
Dear Mr. Camero:
The question arose whether the 3 #9 bars shown in Detail 21/S-19
need additional anchorage.
The beam in question supports horizontal loads such as wind or
earthquake loads. It is a simple supported beam spanning, typic-
ally, between vertical column/beams. These supporting elements
in turn span from floor to roof.
Our horizontal simple beam requires that the bars extend a mini-
mum of 6" into their supports. These spandrel beams can not tear
loose from their supports.
We conclude the support of the spandrel beam is okay as is.
Sincerely^

SUBJECT: PALOMAR AIRPORT OFFICE PARK
Dear Mr. Camero:
Per your request I am sending you herewith copies of all the struct-
ural field reports and sketches on the subject project. If there are
any questions please call me.
Per the City of Carlsbad requirements I have inspected the K-brace
system of Building 7. I have found that all connections and members
have been installed in accordance with the design. During the instal-
lation, the welding procedures and techniques have been observed by the
attending inspection lab and it is my understanding that a positive
report is forth coming within a few days. You will be receiving a
copy of said report.
The K-brace system of Buidling 7 is ready for the City Inspector's
inspection.

1. Approximately one dozen wall panels of Building #6 are complete with respect to
forming and layment of reinforcing.
2. Several wall columns do not have continuous reinforcing bars on the outside face.
2 #7 bars x 5'-0" long shall be used to splice this joint.
3. The superintendent will make certain that the two #5 dowels per 12/S-2 will be
in place before pouring of concrete.
4. At retaining wall type III (16/S-l) splice vertical wall bars by adding #6 x 4'-
0" at 8" on center. This bar will overlap the vertical bars of the 8" masonry
wall and the 12" concrete wall.
5. The City Inspector questioned the anchorage of the 3 #9 bars of Detail 21/S-19.

1. The concrete column/beam of precast panel W-l (Building 1) broke off
during the lifting process.
Correct as follows:
A. Reinforcing bars have to be welded (see attached details A & B)
so that the end product is a straight bar as originally planned.
Cut existing bars as low as possible to remove the broken leg.
If bars can be straightened contractor may do so.
B. Remove concrete of panel as shown on attached Detail "A".
C. Erect panel. Shore and brace on a temporary basis.
D. Replace missing leg by pouring concrete in place as shown on
"A" and 6A/S-13.
E. Details 16/S-2, 27/S-18 & 28/S-18 still apply.
F. Provide additional brace in line "C" as shown on 19A/S-19.
G. Shores and braces may not be removed until concrete and non-

1. Bldg 1, Panel N4 - Inspeceted new leg reinforcement.
Vertical bars were #7 instead of #8. During replacement, contrac-
tor was short one #8 bar. Contractor requested to replace the one
#8 bar with two #7 bars. I agreed.
Tie spacing at bottom 2 Ft. must be 5" per 16/S-2. Add one tie
where existing tie is excessively bent. Chip off concrete some
more for concrete cover at reinforcing bar.
2. Bldg 1, Panel Wl - Inspected new leg reinforcement.
Tie spacing at bottom 2 feet must be 5" per 16/S-2.
3. Bldg 1, Panel N-6 - Damaged concrete at support was removed, rein-
forcement looked all right. Add two dowels per 14/S-18.
4. Bldg 2 - Support of Panel E-l.
Howard Welsh said that he measured the top of the beam and thinks
the support is close to 4 inches, from below it looks more like
2 to 2 1/2 inches.
5. At South end of property, retaining wall type III.
The dowels protruding from the footings are #6 at 8" on center with
alternating heights of 17 and 21 inches. For the 17 inch long
bars, the bond stresses are exceeded. Therefor weld #6 extension
bars onto top of existing bars so that they will extend within
3 inches of the top of the 12 inch masonry.
Weeping holes in concrete may be spaced at 6'-0" on center with
a minimum of 7.5 cubic feet of gravel per weep hole.
