San Diego County, California. These fills were placed during the period between October 24, 1969 and May 15, 1970. Reference Is made to our report of Project No. 69-6-12C, dated January 20, 1970, in which we slated that stability of the slopes would be confirmed and recommendations for design of safe and economical foundations would be made after the gradirg was completed. These items 1 will be discussed further on Pqie 2 of th is report. The approximate areas and depths of filled ground placed under our inspection in accordance with the approved specifications are shown on Drawirg No. I, entitled "Location of Compacted Filled Ground." The grading pion used for the placement of filled ground was prepared by Rick Ergineering Company and doted January 26, 1970. Please note that a portion of the filled ground was placed over compressible ground. This area is referred to on Drawirg No. l os, "fill placed over compressible ground." It is recommended that special design prec01Jtions be exercised in this area to minimize possible damage to the structure as a result of settlement. The approximate locations at which the tests were taken and the fi nol test results ore presented on pqie Tl to T4, inclusive, under the "Table of Test Results." The laboratory determinations of the maximum dry densities and optimum moisture contents of the major fill materials are presented on page TS, under the "Laboratory Test Results." Some of the maximum dry densities shown in the table of test results were combinations of these. These tests were performed in accordance with Test Method No. California 643-B, Part Ill crd Port IV of the California Dlvisi on of High woys Mater! als Manual . The pH of the soil was determined to be 5 .3 and the minimum resistivity WCI$ 375 ohms. Accord- Ire to the Chart for Estimating Years to Perforation of Metal Culverts, these data indicate a useful life of approximately three years for 16 gauge corNgated metal pipe. In order to meet the 25 year life required by the County of San Diego, it ls recommerded that the ml nimum wall thickness of corNgated metal pipe installed on subject project be 12 gauge and that this pipe be treated with an asbesto, bonded bltuminous coatirg and paved invert as Indicated in Table 7-821.6A of Part 7 of the California Division of Highways Plannirg Manual. This treatment will add 20 years to the life of the pipes carrying abrasive ma.terials at flow velocities not exceeding 7 feet per second and for culvert pipes carrying non-abrasive ma.terials at flow velocities greater than 7 feet per second. This treatment coupled with the added life anticipated from 12 gauge pipe rather than 16 gauge pipe will meet the minimum required life expectancy of 25 years. Direct shear tests were performed on selected loose soil samples remolded to 90 percent of maximum dry density that were alt saturated and drained prior to testing. If footings are placed closer to the exposed slopes than five feet inside the top of compacted filled ground slopes, these should be deepened one foot below a one and one half horizontal to one vertical line projected outward and downward from a point five feet horizontally inside the top of the compacted filled ground slopes. Tests indkote that the com- pacted filled ground is odequote to satisfactorily support one or two story wood frame dwelli'lls· designed for the recommended beoring value without detrimental settlements in the areas where the compacted filled ground is placed over stable natural ground. However, it is understood that the foundation design used for the Stables and the Maintenance Buildirg, which were both placed over similar compressible soils, has been performirg satisfactorily. It is recommended that the same design criteria be used for structures in these areas. Through tests and observations it hos been determined that expansive soils exist in the upper three feet below finished grade on all of the lots covered by this report. It is therefore recom- mended that the followirg special design precautions be taken for the houses to be construe led on these lots. 1. Isolated interior piers should not be used. Continuous footirgs should be used throughout, and these should be placed ot o minimum depth of two feet below the lowest adjacent exterior final ground surface. 2. Reinforce and interconnect continuously wilh steel bars all interior and exterior footi rgs with one 115 bar at 3 inches above the bottom of all footi rgs and one #5 bar placed 1 1/2 inches below the top of lhe stems of the footirgs. 3. Use raised wood floors that span between continuous footirgs, or reinforce all concrete slabs with 6 x 6 -10/10 woven wire fabric and provide a minimum of 4 inches of clean sand beneath all concrete slabs. Provide a moisture barrier 2 inches below slabs under livirg areas. 4. Separate garage slabs from perimeter footirgs by 1/2 inch thickness of construc- tion felt or equivalent, to allow independent movement of garage slabs relative to perimeter footi rgs. 5. Provide positive drainage away from all perimeter footirgs to a horizontal distance of at least 6 feet outside the house walls. It Is concluded from the test dato that the fill soils, when uniformly compacted to at least 90 percent of maximum dry density in accordance with the approved specifications, will be stable for heights up to 28 feet wien constructed on a 1 1/2 horizontal to 1 vertical, or flatter slopes. A stability analysis for the proposed fill slope is presented on Drawif8 No. 2, which demon- strates a safety factor of 1.5 assumirg a horizontal seismic force of O .1 g. The above conclusions assume that erosional control and proper drainage to prevent surface water from runnirg c,,,er the top of exposed slopes will be provided. The soils In the upper three feet below finished grade were claulfied as expansive, and therefore the recommendations for special dealgn and precautions presented In the above dated report should be incorporated In the plans and specifications for any proposed construction on this lot. It is recommended that positive drainage, 6 inches of vertical fall In 5 feet horizontally, should be provided around the perimeter of the house. In accordance with your request, this report has been prepared to establish the degree of compaction of the compacted fill as tested by MV Engineering, Inc. between October 2 and 8, 1980. Prior to grading operations, the site was cleared of grass and debris. Adequate keys were made in the proposed fill area in order to establis'.:1 a good base for supporting the proposed com- pacted fills. The fill was then placed in six-to eight-inch (6"-8") lifts and compacted by means of a sheepsfoot roller and heavy construction equipment. Field density tests were performed in accordance with ASTM Tesc Method D-1556-64. Moisture content was determined for each density sample.
