CHECK WITH THE LOCAL INSPECTION JURISDICTION BEFORE BEGINNING ANY INSTALLATION BASED ON THIS NEWSLETTER. CODE REFERENCE SUBJECT PUBLISHED 384 SWITCHBOARDS JUNE 90 The testing and listing standards for switchboards require that the manufacturer identify any equipment 'intended to be installed in the field. Equipment intended for field installation must be identified by part or catalog number on a label in the switchboard. The manufacturer must also provide any instructions necessary for the proper installation of such equipment. These requirements specifically include terminal connectors. Most switchboards are designed to be connected to other sections or equipment with splice and through bus. Some switchboards also provide a set of factory installed terminals for tapping a single circuit ahead of the "service main. Very few switchboards are designed for the field installation of terminals on busses in order to make cable connections. Those designed for this application will include the required markings and installation instructions. The following procedures are established to insure that switchboards are installed in conformance with the testing and listing standards for such equipment. 1. Plan reviewers will reject plans showing field connections of cable to busses unless there is documentation that the equipment is suitable for the field installation of terminals. 2. All new switchboards will be inspected to determine compliance with the listing and manufacturers instructions provided with the equipment. 3. All installations of new cables in existing switchboards will be inspected to determine compliance with the listing and manufacturers instructions provided with the equipment. In some cases, this will require changes to existing cable connections. 4. Switchboards not designed and marked for the field installation of terminals cannot be modified in the field. PRESCRIPTIVE APPROACH Section 3.3 EXAMPLE 3-13* Calculation of Track Lighting Power SITUATION: A tenant leases a /lew, small, 1,000 sf retail store, and installs a lighting system. The entire store is proposed as gross sales area,' tf>ere are no separate storage rooms, toilets, etc. within the shop. Alternative component package A was used when the original building was permitted. The permit applicant chooses to use the whole building approach to lighting compliance. The proposed lighting system consists of three lighting tracks extending the length of the shop. Each track is 50 feet in length - 150 feet of track altogether. Drawings submitted with the permit application show one 150 watt fixture for each 12 feet of lighting track - a total of 12 fixtures. This is the only lighting in the store. The proposed lighting power density is 1.8 watts/sf - 12 fixtures times 150 watts/fixture divided by the 1,000 sf conditioned floor area. CODE APPLICATION: The calculation of the installed lighting power density must assume minimum wattages for track lighting. It must assume 1,200 watts for each 120 volt circuit of track lighting. A minimum of 2,800 watts must be assumed for each 277 volt circuit of track lighting. These minimum values must be used when the proposed lamp wattages are less; when the proposed watcages are higher, then the proposed values are used. The proposed store has each of the three lighting tracks on a separate 120 volt circuit. Therefore, the minimum of 1,200 watts per circuit, rimes three circuits, or 3,600 watts must be assumed as the installed lighting power. Dividing this number by the conditioned floor area results in an installed lighting power density of 3.6 watts/sf, which does not comply with the 2.0 watts/sf requirement for retail package A. If this proposed store were to have all three lighting tracks on a si.ng-.le 277 volt circuit, then the minimum lighting power assumed would be 2,800 watts. This is less than the 3,600 watts determined above, but it still exceeds the lr 800 watts claimed by the applicant. The 2800 watts would be the correct installed lighting power, yielding an installed LPD of 2.8 watts. In either of the cases, the installed lighting power density exceeds the allowable 2. 0 watts/sf. The applicant must reduce the circuit capacities in order to comply. 3-68 Revised September 1988 PRESCRIPTIVE APPROACH Section 3.3 Track Lighting. Track lighting presents a special situation in calculating installed lighting power, because the number and type of luminaires can be easily changed at any time. To calculate the installed wattage for track lights, two values need to be determined: (!) the total luminaire wattage proposed to operate on each track lighting circuit; and (2) . 50% of the lighting power capacity (watts) of the track circuit to be installed (See Example 3-13a) . For each 120 volt circuit, the second value would be 1,200 watts. For each 277 volt circuit, the second value would be 2,800 watts. The wattage used in the calculation of installed lighting power must be the larger of these two values. In some situations, extra length of track is desired to provide greater flexibility in locating lighting fixtures, not for increasing load capacity. In these cases, the designer can limit the wattage charged as installed lighting by providing interlock switching that limits the circuits (and therefore the elec-ric capacity) of track lighting that can be operated simultaneously.
