Project No. 73-3-26A Arroyo Vi1 las Condominium Lots 245 of La Costa Valley Unit No. 5 Rancho La Costa Carlsbad, California This is in response to your letter of May 30, 1973, concerning several matters which have arisen during the field construction on the subject property, that might potentially affect the structural design details of the proposed buildings. The following responses are numbered to correspond to the numbered parographs in your letter. 1. It is agreeable with us to have a footing embedment of 18 inches measured from current rough pod elevations, provided the rough grade is built up 6 inches or mare and the footings remain 24 inches minimum below the lowest adjacent exterior final ground surface. The trash- free on-site excavated soils may be used in building up the additional 6 inches, if the footings and concrete slabs on grade are specially designed for expansive soil conditions as described an page 11 of our soils investigation report dated April 12, 1973. We would like to point out, however, that a minimum of 4 inches of crushed rock 3/4 inch to 1 inch in size will be required beneath all concrete slabs, and on tho 6 inches of compacted filled ground. Boforo placcrnant of the 6 inches of fill soils, the area to receive the fills should be scarified to a depth of 6 inches, moistened or dried as necessary to slightly above optimum, compacted to at least 90 percent of maximum dry density, and then the fills placed and compacted to at least 90 percent of maximum dry density in accordance with the A.S.T.M. D 1557-70 method of compaction, at a moisture slightly above the optimum moisture content of the fill sails. The 4 inch thickness of crushed rock should also be compacted to a density not less than 90 percent of the maximum dry density obtained by the A.S. T.M. D 1557-70 method of cmpaction, with proper gravel correction for those portions exceeding 3/4 inch in diameter. If the 6 inch thickness of compacted fill is so prepared, the allowable passive pressure far lateml resistance may be initiated starting from report dated April 12, 1973. ..the top of this compacted filled ground, using Case (A) values presented on page 10 of our Project No. 73-3-26A -5- ..
