SUBJECT: Preliminary Soil Investigation Please find enclosed my Preliminary Soil Investigation done at your request for the above referenced site legally described as Lot 18, Map 2492, Buena Vista Gardens, City of Carlsbad, County of San Diego, State of California. The investigation consists of 3 test pits dug with a backhoe to the depth of influence of the proposed building. Appropriate field inspection and laboratory testing were performed. The results of this investigation along with my recommendations are found in the accompanying report . In summary it is my opinion that there are no obvious geotechnical hazards and the existing soil should be able to support the proposed structure as understood without further compaction for the pad. Please call me to inspect the footings after the trenches have been dug and cleaned to verify that conditions are as reported herein. TABLE OF CONTENTS IV . I. General Information I1 . GEOLOGIST lo22 Page 1 PRELIMINARY SOIL INVESTIGATION BUENA VISTA CIRCLE CARLSBAD, CALIFORNIA PROPOSED McMAHON-SUITTS RESIDENCE I. GENERAL INFORMATION A Preliminary Soil Investigation has been prepared for the above mentioned site legally described as Lot 18, Map 2492, Buena Vista Gardens, City of Carlsbad, County of San Diego, State of California. The site is located approximately 450 feet along Buena Vista Circle southerly of Laguna Drive. It is understood the site will be for a two story wood frame residential structure. The foundation will use continuous concrete wall footings with concrete slab-on-grade. There will be an eight foot high basement under the den towards the front of the house. The building is planned to be constructed on the native ground and there will be no grading except minor leveling for drainage purposes and the excavation for the basement. The excavated material will be exported from the site. XI. PURPOSE OF INVLSTTCATTON The purpose of this investigation is to determine the following: 1. the existing soil conditions; 2. the presence and effect of any expansive soil; 3. the proper soil strength parameters for the footing and basement restraining wall design; 4. the presence of existing fill or groundwater; 5. the geologic conditions and obvious geologic hazards; 6. any construction problems that can be anticipated, and to make appropriate foundation recommendations. 111. FIELD INVESTIGATION A. Surface Conditions The subject site is a triangular shaped parcel with approximate dimensions of 176' fronting an existing house lot CLAUDE B. PARKER GEOTECHNICAL CONSULTANT OFFICE 740 METCALF. STE. 7 ESCONDIDO, CA e2025 (714) 741-25e2 HOME 1022 HOWE PL. ESCONOIDO. CA e2025 (714) 748-6182 CIVIL ENGINEER r18.987 GEOLOGIST #512 CERT. ENG. GEOLOGIST lo22 Page 2 on the south, 177' on the north and west side along Buena Vista Circle and 96' along a private road on the east side. The orientation and a vicinity map of the site are shown on the enclosed "Test Pit Location Map", Plate 1. The site presently is a flat grass/weed covered vacant lot. There are no erosion swales or no nearby slopes to slide. There are no existing man made structures or indications of previous buildings. B. Test Pits Three exploratory test pits were dug with a backhoe on 5 September 1984 in the building area as indicated on Plate 1. Samples of the soils excavated were obtained for laboratory analyses. The soils were visually classified by field identification procedure in accordance with the Unified Soil Classification. A simplified version of the Unified Soil Classification is included in the Appendix. Continuous logs of the soils encountered in the test pits were recorded in the field. The logs of the test pits shown on Plate 2 and 3 are based on the field logs, on inspection of the samples, and on the laboratory test results. C. Subsurface Conditions Geologically the site is underlain by Tertiary marine sediments of Pleistocene age, the Linda Vista formation. The profile under the pad consists of about a half foot of brown silty sand, topsoil, over a massive strata of brown orange silty sand. This strata is essentially featureless without obvious bedding or structure. This strata to the depth of interest for this project was in a firm condition. There are no mapped faults projecting through the site nor were any detected during the investigation. The nearest active fault is the Elsinore Fault, approximately 23 miles to the northeast. It is believed the greatest geologic hazard would be from ground shaking in the event of an earthquake. There were two soil types encountered in the field and referred to on the logs as Soil Type 1 and Soil Type 2. For engineering purposes however both soil types were very similar. The laboratory tests indicated that the strata seemed to grade denser and more mist with depth. The soil types are listed on the next page. CLAUDE B. Density Tests Moisture contents and densities were determined on four paraffin coated undisturbed samples using the water displacement method. These data were used for the direct shear test and bearing capacity calculations. The results are presented on the logs at the corresponding locations. B. Grain Size Analysis One grain size analysis was performed on the upper soil, Soil Type 1, in general accordance with ASTM D422 for classification purposes and to verify its nonexpansive character. The results are presented below. GRAIN SIZE ANALYSIS Test Soil % Passing U.S. Standard Sieve Number Unif . Loc . Type 3/4" 4 10 20 40 100 140 200 Class. Direct Shear Test A direct shear test was performed on a representative sample of Soil Type 2, the brown orange silty sand found at footing depth, to determine soil strength parameters to be used in the bearing capacity calculation. Three specimens of this soil were prepared by molding the soil in a 2 1/2 inch diameter 1 inch high rings to the inplace conditions of moisture and density. The specimens were loaded with normal loads of 1, 2, and 3 KSF respectfully and sheared to failure in undrained shear. The results are presented on the next page. CLAUDE B. The tests and observations indicate there are no large geotechnical problems with respect to the geology or soil conditions on the subject site. All fill should be compacted and any fill over 12 inches should be tested by this laboratory . 2. There were no obvious geologic hazards and it is felt that design in acordance with the U.B.C. Seismic Zone IV should be adequate. 3. Use at least two 14 reinforcing rod's in the wall footings. Place one rod 4 inches from the top and the other rod 4 inches from the bottom of the footing. It is important to direct and maintain all drainage so that water is not allowed to pond around the foundation. Experience and good engineering practice would limit this value to 2500 psf. 7. It is recommended that the basement block wall be designed for the restrained condition with pressure loading as shown below. Y= lZ8 pc4 8.
