The new section of retaining wall is to be constructed on the east side of the landslide at the La Costa de Marbella site. The purpose of the new retaining wall is to replace a small portion of an existing retaining wall that was damaged by landslide movement and the grading work recently completed. It is our I understanding that a registered structural engineer at Burkett and Wong will design the new retaining wall. The purpose of this report is to provide geotechnical recommendations for the design of the new I section of retaining wall, as follows: 1. Allowable Retaining Wall Bearing Value: Our recommended allowable bearing value for the retaining wall footing is 2,000 psf. American Geotechnical must inspect the retaining wall footing excavation prior to placement of steel and concrete. If any soil cracks (such as from the landslide movement) are observed in the footing excavation, they must be filled in with dry sand or slurry. In addition, if soft or loose soil conditions are observed in the footing excavation, then the bearing soil will need to be removed and re-compacted so that it has a minimum relative compaction of 90%. We anticipate that the upper 1-foot of soil exposed at the bottom of the retaining wall footing will need to be removed and re-compacted. Design Active Earth Pressure: Assuming the structural engineer designs the wall so that it is able to rotate at the top, our recommended allowable active earth pressure is 35 pcf (equivalent I fluid pressure). This value assumes that import granular soil will be used as backfill material. In our opinion, the on-site clayey soil cannot be used as backfill material because of the Ii detrimental effects of expansive soil pressures. The import soil should consist of a granular material, such as decomposed granite (D.G.). The backfill must be compacted and tested by American Geofechnicol and it must be compacted so that it has a minimum relative compaction of 90%. We would also recommend that the upper /2 foot of the backfill consist of ii the on-site clayey soil to reduce the potential for water infiltration into the backfill soil. 3. Drainage System: A drainage system is recommended at the base of the retaining wall. The drainage system should consist of a 4 inch diameter Schedule 40 PVC perforated pipe, surrounded by 1 cubic foot per foot of open graded rock (1/2 or 3/8 inch size rock), that is in turn surrounded by a permeable geofabric. The drain line should be tied to an underground drain line system or be directed to an otherwise suitable disposal area.
