STRUCTURAL OBSERVATIONS The existing structure is a 2 story wood-framed residence with a slab-on-grade foundation system. The roof is pitched with concrete shake roofing material. The exterior finish on the bearing walls of the residence is stucco, while the interior walls and ceilings have a drywall finish. The front of the residence faces south. I examined the roof framing and proposed location for the new furnace installation. I observed the following: I. The roof framing consists of pre-manufactured wood roof trusses spaced at 24" on center. 2. The new HVAC equipment (FAU plus two plenums) is approximately 30" wide x 95" long, and weighs approximately 190 lbs. 3. The new HVAC equipment is supported by the bottom chord of the existing pre-manufactured wood roof trusses. 4. A 4'x5' sheet of 3/8" thick plywood is installed on the 2x4 bottom chord of the trusses for the furnace to set on. This plywood "spreads" out the weight of the HVAC equipment to 3 roof trusses. See photos #I through #5. CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS Based on my review and evaluation, it is my opinion that the existing pre-manufactured wood roof trusses are structurally adequate to safely support the weight of the new HVAC equipment. My analysis and conclusion takes in to account the weight of the HVAC equipment, the load capacity and span of the existing trusses and the fact the weight is "spread out" and supported by 3 roof trusses.
