Subject: Report of Compaction Tests
Royal Homes No. 6
Elm Ave. at Appian Road
Carlsbad, California . .
Job No.: 0-141
Gentlemen:
In accordance with your request this firm has inspected and tested the compac-
ted fill placed on the subject site between June 12 and June 18, 1980. A plan
of the site showing the test locations and other data pertinent to this report
is attached as Figure No. 1.
Reference data used in the preparation of this report consisted of a Grading
Plan prepared by Brian Smith Engineering, Inc., dated May 5, 1980.
The project was essentially a cut and export job with a minor amount of fill
being placed on lot No. 1.
Site preparation, grading and testing were conducted in the following manner:
Site Preparation
A. Surface debris and vegetation was stripped and hauled off site.
B. No trees were existing on the site when we arrived.
C. Existing fill soils were removed in the old road and errosinal area on
lot No. 1.
D. A 5' foot deep shear key was provided at the toe of the 2:l fill slope on
up slope.
lot No. 1. Benches were excavated into the bedrock as the fill progressed
Grading
A. Fill soils were spread in 4 to 6 inch loose lifts, watered as necessary
and compacted to minimum requirements.
B. The method used for adding moisture and compacting was a water truck and
rolling with the track mounted grading equipment.
July 10, 1980
Page One Job NO.: 0-141
Testing
A. Field density tests were performed in accordance with ASTM test method
D1556. The results of these tests, taken during the course of grading
are attached as a part of this report.
B. Maximum density and optimum moisture were determined for each type of
fill soil in accordance with ASTM test method Dl55.7-70. The results of
these determinations along with the expansion potential of the soils,
determined in accordance with U.B.C. test standard 29-2, are as follows:
Soil Type Max. Den. Opt. Moist. Expan. Index
A - Clayey sand 112.7 14.9 148
B - Sandy clay 116.3 12.6 90
C - Clayey silt & gravelly sand 116.7 12.3 88
Conclusions and Recommendations
The expansion potential of the onsite soils that will directly affect shallow
foundations and slabs is considered very high.
Remedial construction measures to minimize this condition are recommended as
follows:
Footings shall be continuous under all exterior and interior bearing walls and
shall be imbedded a minimum depth of 24 inches below the lowest adjacent ground
surface. Reinforce the continuous footings wlth a minimum of 2 #5 zebar placed
in the top and in the bottom.
Concrete floor slabs shall be a minimum of 4 inches~,thick and shall be rein-
forced with 6x6 -.6x6 welded wire mesh placed at midpoint in the slab. Floor
clean sand.
slabs shall be castyn a 8 inch thick layer of graded aggregate base course or
The subgrade soils below proposed living area floor slabs shall be premoistened
to in excess of optimum moisture condition to a depth of 24 inches prior to the
pouring of the concrete.
The recommended soil bearing value for continuous footings a minimum of 12 in-
cent finished grade shall be 1500 P.S.F.
ches in width and imbedded a minimum depth of 24 inches below the lowest adja-
The foregoing values are for dead and live loads and may be increased 1/3 for
temporary horizontal forces.
It is the opinion of this firm that the fill soils placed on the subject site,
as reported herein, have been properly compacted for their intended use.
Respectfully submitted,
