Gentlemen:
This is to confirm our telephone conversation with Mr. Ray Green of the City of Corlsbbad on
May 7, 1974. It is our opinion that footings placed at a minimum depth of 18 inches below
the lowest adjacent exterior ffnal ground surface will be adequate for the marginally ex-
pansive soil conditions existing on the site. All other recommendations presented on page 2
of our report dated May 6, 1974 should becornplied with durIng the construction of the
proposed structure.

Gentlemen:
This is to present revised recommendations for construction on the expansive soils existing in the
upper three feet of compacted filled ground placed on the subject site. The upper soils on the
cut portion of the site have been determined to be nonexpansive.
Subsequent to our "Final Report on Compacted Filled Ground" dated May 1, 1974, we were
authorized to perform expansion tests on the two types of soil placed in the upper three feet
below finished grade in the compacted filled ground area. The tests were performed on samples
molded to 90 percent of maximum dry density and the results of these tests are presented as
fol I ows:
Soil Description
Light brown fine sandy clay
Brown silty clay
Percent Expans ion
Under Unit Load of
500 Pounds per Square
Foot from Air Dry
to Saturation a
2.40
4.9s
Based on the results of these tests It is concluded that the soils exhlbited less volumetric change
with change in moisture content than those in the "critically expanslve" category. Therefore
we are presentlng revised recommendations for the design of footings and floor slabs placed on the
compacted filled ground area at he subject site. These are on the following page.

footings and one t4 bar placed 1 1/2 inches below the top of the stems
of the footings.
3. Reinforce all concrete slabs with at least 4 x 6 - 10/10 welded wire fabric.
A moisture barrier should be placed over the subgrude soils and a 4 inch
thickness of clean sand should be placed over the moisture burrier and below
the bottom of the slab.
4. Separate garuge slabs from perimeter footings by a 1/2 inch thickness of con-
struction felt or equivalent, to allow independent movement of garuge slabs
relative to perimeter footings. Assure complete separation by extending the
felt over the full depth of the front thickened edge of the garage slab. Also,
cut off the garage door stops at least 1/2 inch above the slab.
5. Provide positive dminage away from all perimeter footings with a vertical fall
of at least 5 inches in a horizontal distance of 5 feet outside the perimeter
walls of the building.

G4ntlemen:
This is to report the results of tush and observations made in order to inspect the compaction of
filled ground placed on a portion of Lot 156, La Costa South Unit No. 1, Carlsbad, California.
The fill was placed durlng the period between March 28 cmd April 3, 1974.
The approxlmate mea and dephs of filled ground placed under our Inspection in accordance
with the approved specifications are shown on the attached Drawina No. 1, entitled "Location
of Compacted Filled Ground." The grading plan used for the placement of filled ground WQS
ppamd by Rick EnginseriryJ Company and dated March 19, 1974.
The approximate locations at which the tests were taken are shown on Drawing No. 1 and the
final test rmultr are presented on paee 3, under the "Table of Test Results." The laboratory
determinations of the maximum dry densities and optimum moisture contents of the malar fill
materials are presented on pcgle 3, under the "Laboratory Test Resulh." Some of the maximum
dry densitla shown in the "Table of Test Results" ware combinations of these. The tests were

The final results of tests and obuvotiorrrr indlcote that the compacted fllled ground ha, hen
placed at 90 percent of the maximum dry donity or greater. It hcs been determined that the
fill materials, compcrctd to 90 pamt of the mc#imm dry density, have a safe bearing value
of 1510 pounds per quare foot for one foot wlda continuom footings founcbd at a minimum
depth and placed five ket or morr id& the top of compacted filled ground slopes. If
footings am place~4 closer to the expc#sd slop.$ than 3 feet insIda the top of ampachd filled
gound slopes, these huld be deepened om foot bel ow a 1 1/2 horizontal to 1 wrtfcol line
projected outword and downward from a #oht 5 feet horizontally inside the top of compacted
filled ground slopes.
Critically expnslve tolIr were plclcrd in the upper three feet below finished grade. Therefore,
in orckr to minimize pdblo dcanqglng effects due to differential movements of them potentlotly
expanrive boils, the following special design and precautions me recommended.
1. Avoid h use of isoolated interior piers. Use continuous interconnected
reinforced footings tht&out, and place these at a minimum depth of
24 inches below the lowest adjacent exterfor flnal ground surface.
2.
3.
4.
Reinforce and Interconnect continuourly with steel ban all interior and
exterior footings wtth om 15 ba at 3 inches dove ths bottom of the
footings and om #5 bar placed 1 1/2 inches below the top of the stem
of the footings.
Raised &n floors that span behrulsan contlnuow footlngs are best, or
use conrtnte rich reinforced with at least 6 x 6 - la/lO welded wire
fabric. A minimum of 4 inchat of crushed rock, 3/4 to 1 inch in she,
should be placed heath all concrete slabs d covered with a molsture
barrier. Two Inohm of cison sad should then bQ placed over the moisture
hier and below tha bottom of the slob.
Separate gar- si& Cram partmeter btf- by a 1/2 inch thiukness of
construction felt or equivalent, to allow independent movoment of gargle
SI& relative to perimeter footings. Arure complete separation by ex=
tending the fblt over the full depth of the front thickunod edge of the
gcrrqge SI&. Also, cut off the garago door sw at leart 1/2 inch above
th slab.
5. Rovide positive drafncrgo QWQY Qrom all primetar footings wtth a vertical
fall of at hat 5 inches in a horizontal distance of 5 feet ouhlde the house Wlh.
All buried exterior utility IIMI should be City of Carlsbad approved plcrtic lines due to the
