SOIL TESTING & INSPECTION SERVICES August 26, 1986 Project No. CL-.1576 PcHa TKG Constructors P. 0. Box 2167 Del Mar, CA 92014 Subject: Report of Certification of Compacted Fill Ground 0 PrOposed Single Family Dwelling 2440 La Costa Avenue La Cos CIiforrrf • * Gentlemen, -• Inrespbnse to your request, the following report has -been prepared to indicate results of soil tests, observations, and inspection of earth-work construction at the subject site. Testing 'and inspection was performed on August 20, 1986. Briefly ! our findings reveal filled ground has been compacted to a minimum of ninety percent. Therefore, we recommend construction continue as scheduled. SCOPE.- Our firm was retained to inspect the graded pad for compliance • with current ,standard practices and to determine the degree of compaction of placed fill. Grading plans were not provided. Approximate locations and -depth of filld •groun and extent Of earth-work construction covered in. this report are indicated on attached Plate No. 1 entitled "Test Location Sketch." The site was graded in order to create a..split-level building pad to accommodate slab on grade and raised floor construction. - Post Office Box 271338, Escondido, CA 92027 9 (619) 741-5289 COMPACTION LABS,INC.1 SOIL TESTING & INSPECTION SERVICES 0 LABORATORY TESTING: Representative soils samples were collected and returned to the laboratory for testing. .Thefollowing tests were performedand' are tabulated on attached Plate No. 3. Optimum Moisture - Maximum Density (ASTM D-1557) Expansion Potential Test SOIL CONDITIONS: Native soils encountered were silty-'and 'sandy-clays. Fill soils were both imported and generated from 'the on-site excavation. The building site contains a transitibn from cut to fill as. delineated on attached Plate No. 1, entitled "Test Location Sketch.". Expansive soils, were 'observed and exist at finish grade. Therefore, special recoñuuendatjons'wjl]. be necessary to reduce the probability of structural damage. Test results indicate fill soils were properly placed, watered and compacted. To determine the degree of compaction, field' density testswere performed in accordance' withASTM D-1556 or D-2922 at the locations designated on attached Plate No. 1. A tabulation of test results and their vertical locations are presented. on attached Plate No. 2. ' ,RECOMMENDATIONS AND CONCLUSIONS: Grading was performed'prior"to our arrival. Therefore, the following recommendations are based on the premise that 'all areas tested are representative of the entire project. Compacted fill and natural ground have adequate strength to safely support the proposed loads. Slopes are stable as constructed with relation to' deep seated failure; provided they are properly maintained. ' Continuous footings having 'a minimum width of 12 inches and founded a minimum of 24 inches below lowest adjacent grade will have an allowable bearing value of 1500 pounds per square foot. Footings located on ,or adjacent to slopes should be founded at a depth such that the horizontal distance COMPACTION LABS, INC.'. SOIL TESTING & INSPECTION SERVICES from the bottom outside face of footing to the face of the slope is a minimum of five feet. 4. On site expansive soils will require special recommendations, to reduce structural damage occurring from excessive subgrade and foundation movement. Recommendations set forth 'will reduce the probability of future damage and should be strictly adhered to: In the case of slab on grade construction, all continuous footings should be founded 'a minimum of 24 inches below lowest adjacent grade. In the case of raised floor' construction, exterior perimeter footings should be continuous and founded a minimum of 24 inches below lowest adjacent grade. Isolated interior footings should be founded a minimum of 24 inches' below lowest interior grade. . Contiñuoüs footings should be 'reinforced with two, No. 4-bars top and bottom. Steel should be positioned 3 inches above, bottom of footing and 3 inches below top of 1 footing or finish floor. ' Interior slabs should' be '4 inches thick, reinforced with 10/10, 6 x 6 welded wire mesh, and underlain with a 4 'inch base consisting of sand or crushed rock.' Sand should be tested in accordance with ASTM D2419 to insure a minimum sand equivalent of 30. Slab reinforcing should be extended through joints and provide a tension tie with perimeter footings'. If this method proves impractical during construction, an alternative method may be employed. This method consists of No. 3 bars, 30 inches. on center, extending 30 bar diameters into both slab and foundation. Exterior slabs should be-4 inches thick and underlain with a 4., inch base of crushed rock or sand. Slabs less than 4 feet in width, require no reinforcing. Slabs exceeding 5 feet in width should -be reinforced with 10/10, 6 x 6 welded wire mesh and provided with weakened plane joints. Slabs between 5 and 10 feet in width should be provided with' a longitudinal' weakened plane joint at centerline. Slabs greater than 10 feet in width should be provided with a weakened plane joint located 3 ,feet inside the exterior perimeter. •Weakened plane joints should be constructed as deliniated on attached Plate No. 4 entitled "Weakened Plane Joint Detail." Clayey soils should not be allowed to dry prior to placing concrete. They should be sprinkled to insure they are kept in a very moist condition or at a moisture content exceeding optimum moisture content by a minimum of '3 percent. COMPACTION LABS, 'INC. SOIL TESTING & INSPECTION SERVICES - Prior to pouring concrete, we should be contacted to document the aforementioned construction' details have been adhered to.
