CARLSBAD, CALIFORNIA
PROJECT DESCRIPTION AND SCOPE
This report presents the results of our soils investigation
for an eight lot subdivision, located at the north end of
Ocean Street and the intersection of Garfield Street, Carlsbad,
California It is our understanding that six single family
residences and duplex units are planned for the site The
construction of these buildings is to be wood frame with
concrete on-grade slabs
It is further understood that a minimal amount of grading
will be necessary to develop the site The site configuration
and test trench locations are shown on Plate No 1 of this
report
This soils investigation was undertaken to
a) Determine the physical properties and prevailing
soils including their supporting capacities and
settlement characteristics
IQ SCT 12700 January 16, 1978 Page Two
b) Provide design information regarding foundations
and the site grading.
C) Determine potential construction difficulties and
provide recommendations concerning these problems
FINDINGS
Site Description
The'subject site is an irregular shaped parcel of land with
the eastern portion nearly level and the rest of the site
sloping gently towards the west and northwest Vegetation
consists of a moderate growth of grass over the entire site
The only other vegetation consists of two trees and one tree
stump near the eastern boundary There are three shallow
pits .2 to 3 feet deep and approximately 20 feet in diameter
as shown on the appended site plan Most of the project is
surrounded with a two way residential street No buildings,
foundations or other manmade structures were present except
for a 2 inch capped pipe as shown on the attached site plan
The only utilities found on the property consisted of a
power pole with some overhead electrical and/or telephone
lines near the eastern boundary Most of the surrounding
land has already been developed and is being used for residential
purposes..: .. .
. Soil Conditions . . . .
The site is underlain..',by an undetermined thickness of
Quaternary and Recent sedimentary materials consisting
almost entirely of silty sands The upper 18 to 24 inches of
this material is medium brown in color and is in a moist,
loose condition with numerous grass roots present Below
this depth, the material changes very abruptly to a light
reddish brown, silty sand with a consistency of dense to
very dense.. .: • . .. : •

: RECOMMENDATIONS
Site Preparation • ':. S
Tree' Stump Rernoval:..'If the tree stump is to be removed we
recommend all roots larger than 1 1/2 inches be taken out
and the soils at the bottom of theresuiting excavation be
scarified to a 'dep.th• of 12 inches and be compacted. Uniformly
compacted fill may then be placed in the resulting excavation
All soils, as mentioned above, should be compacted to a
minimum of 90% relative compaction.
'Shal1ow Pits: Thethreeexistingshallow pits should be
prepared to receive' fill and recommended
above 'for the depression resulting from the removal of the
tee stump.. .. .'.• ' . . '
2", Capped Pipe:. The existing 2 inch pipe. should be removed
from within the site boundary, and should be properly capped
at the property line.
Building Pad Preparation After normal clearing operations
'and prior to construction we recommend that the loose surface
'soils under' 'the proposed structures. be densified to a minimum
of .90%'of their maximum dry density'. These soils' should be
densified to the top of the dense, light reddish brown,
silty sands found typically at approximately 18 'inches.to 24
inches below the existing natural grade.. Should the loose
'surface materials be .found deeper than .24 inches,, we recommend
the soils be .compaàted to a maximum depth of 36 inches below
proposed finished grade or 24 inches below the bottom of the
'foôtings' whichever 'is •gréatèr. A sufficient number of. in-.
place density tests should be performed during or after the
densificat'ion..efforts-have been completed to insure that the'
•, above recommendations have been complied with.
Earthwork All earthwork and grading contemplated for site
SCT 12700 January 16, 1978 Page Four
preparation should be accomplished in accordance with the
attached Pecornmended trading Specifications and Special
Provisions Utility trench backfill within 5 feet of the
Proposed structure and. beneath asphalt pavement should be
compacted to a minimum of 90% The maximum dry density of
these soil types should be determined in accordance with
A S T M Test Method 1557-70T, Method A or C
Foundations . •... S .
General: Conventional spread footings founded in nonexpansive
soil.are recommended for the support of the proposed structures.
Conventional spread footings should be founded at a minimum of
12 inches below adjacent finished grade for one and two-
story structures and have a minimum width of 12 inches
Spread footings may be designed for an allowable soil bearing
pressure of 1550 pounds per square foot.
Settlement Characteristics The anticipated total and/or
differential settlements for the proposed structures may. be
considered to be within tolerable limits provided the recommendations
presented in this report are followed
Expansive Characteristics: The prevailing foundation soils
were found to be nondetrimentally expansive and will not
require special consideration and/or design.
LIMITATIONS
The recommendations and opinions expressed in this report
reflect our best estmate of the project requirements based
on an evaluation of the subsurface soil conditions encountered
• ..atthe subsurface explóration locations and the assumption
that the Soil conditions do not deviate appreciably from
those encountered It should be recognized that the performance
of the foundations and/or cut and fill slopes may be influenced
by undisclosed or. unforeseen variations in the soil conditions
SCT 12700 January 16, 197' Page Five
that may occur in the intermediate and unexplored areas
Any unusual conditions not covered in this report that may
be encountered during site development should be brought to
the attention of the soils engineer so that he may make
modifications if necessary. In addition, this office should
be advised of any major changes in the project scope or
proposed site grading so that it may be determined if additional
investigation would be necessary
FIELD EXPLORATIONS
,Six subsurface explorations were made at the locations
indicated on the attached Plate Number 1 on January 6, 1978
These explorations consisted of trenches dug by means of a
backhoe The field work was conducted under the observation
of our engineering geological personnel
The explorations were carefully logged when made These
logs are. presented on the following Plate numbers 2 through
4 The soils are described in accordance with the Unified
Soils Classification System as illustrated on the attached
simplified chart. In addition, a verbal textural description,
the wet color, the apparent moisture and the density or
consistency are given on the Logs Soil densities for granular
soils was given as either very loose, loose, medium dense,
dense or very dense. .
Disturbed samples of typical and representative soils were
obtained and returned to the laboratory for testing
.• •:..H. ..
LABORATORY TESTING
Laboratory tests were performed in accordance with the
generally accepted American Society for Testing and Materials
(A S T M ) test methods or suggested procedures A brief
description of the tests performed are presented below:
SCT 12700 January. 16, 1978 Page Six
Moisture-Density' Field moisture content and dry
density were determined for some 'undisturbed
samples obtained This information was an aid to
classifcátion, and permitted recognition of
variations in material consistency with depth
The dry unit weight is determined in pounds per
cubic'foot,.ànd the field moisture content is
determined as a percentage of the soil's dry
weight The results are summarized in the trench
logs.
Classification; ' Field 'classifications were 'verified
in the laboratory by visual examination The
final sOil claSsifications 'are in, accordance with
the 'Unified Soil Classification System.
C) Direct Shear Tests Direct shear tests were
performed to determine the failure envelope based
on yield shear strength The shear box was designed
to accoinodate a sample having diameters of 2.375
inches or 2.50 inches and a height of 1.0 inch.,
Samples were tested at different vertical loads
and at saturated moisture content The shear
stress was applied at ,a constant rate of strain of
'
' ' approximately' 0.05 inches per minute. The results
of these tests are presented on attached Plate No
d) , Compaction Test: The maximum -dry deflsity and
• ,.: optimum moisture' content of typical soils were
determined in the laboratory in accordance with
A.s.T..M. Standard Test D-1557-70 Method A. The
results of these tests are presented on the attached

Materials placed in the fill shall be approved by the soil engineer
and shall be free of vegetable matter and other delterious sub-
stances. Granular-soil shall contain sufficient fine material to
fill the voids. The definition and disposition of oversized rocks,
expansive and/or detrimental Soils are covered in the Special Pro-
visions. ' Expansive soils, soils of poor gradation or' strength
characteristics may be thoroughly mixed with other soils to provide
satisfactory fill 'material, but only with the explicit consent of
the soil engineer..
'PLACING AND COMPACTION OF FILL'
Approved fill material shall be placed in areas prepared to receive'
fill in layers not to, exceed six inches in compacted thickness.
Each layer shall have, auniform moisture content in the range that
will allow, the 'compaction effort'to be efficiently applied to achieve
the specified degree of compaction. Each layer shall be uniformly
compacted to a minimum specified density with adequately sized equip-
ment, either specifically designed' for soil compaction or of proven
reliability. ' The minimum degree of compaction to be achieved is
specified in, either the Special Provisions or the recommendations
contained in the preliminary soil investigation report.
Field tests and inspectiOns to check the.degree of compaction of the
fill will be taken by the soil engineer or his representative. The
location and frequency of the tests shall be at the soil engineer's
discretion. In general, the density tests will be made at' an inter-
val not 'exceeding 'two feet in vertical rise and/or 500 cubic yards
of embankment. :
SEASON LIMITS
