Gentlemen:
As authorized in our recent 'telephone conversation, this report
presents the results of a soil reconnaissance performed at the.
subject site. It is understood that the proposed project will
involve the construction of a two story, wood-frame addition to
the existing single family residence. The addition will consist
of-a lower, three-car garage, and an' upper master suite.. A
portion of the existing structure will be demolished to allow for
the driveway to be. extended to the new garage. The site con-
figuration and location of the proposed structure is shown On the
following Figure 1.
The purpose of ithjs report is to -provide geotechnical criteria
for the site preparation and the design of the proposed struc-
ture. The recommendations contained herein are based on a
surface reconnaissance, subsurface exploration, laboratory
testing, and professional experience in the general site area..
Design values may include presumptive parameters based on
professional judgement.. .
SITE DESCRIPTION
The project sit6 consists of a rectangular-shaped lot about 50
feet wide and about 107.5 feet long. It is located in an es-
- tablished residential subdivision and is bounded by developed

I residential lots to the north, south, andeast; and Jefferson
Street to the west. A wood-frame residence exists near the

center of the site Drainage is accomplihed by sheet flow to
the west across the nearly level site. Vegetation existing on
the site consists primarily of lawn and several trees. l r
suBsuRpAcE CONDITIONS
I The site is underlain by consolidated sands of Pleistocene age
terrace' deposits. These materials are exposed 'very, near the
I surface in the area of the proposed addition. They are covered
by about 0.5 feet of topsoil disturbed by landscaping.
The foundation soil, as. revealed in the subsurface explorations,
consist of red-browr, damp, medium dense to dense, silty, fine
I grained sand The material is nonpiastic and is considered
nonexpansive. . The consolidated sands-are' considered suitable to

support' conventional shallow.. foundations. . .
I .Groundwater:. Shallow groundwater or groundwater'seepage was not.
encountered in the subsurface explorations. Groundwater' is
expected to be below the depth of foundation influence in the
I '
proposed building area. It should be recognized that excessive
irrigation on the project site or on adjacent sites can cause a
I '
' perched groundwater conditions to develop at some future date.
This typically occurs at underlying contacts with less permeable
materials.

RECOMMENDATIONS
General Discussion No geotechnical conditions were apparent at
the site which would preclude the proposed development as plan-
ned, provided the recommendations provided herein are complied
with.. Soils related site constraints which would cause potential
construction delays are not expected. Conventional shallow
foundations are considered suitable to support the proposed
structure. Only minimal site preparation is considered neces-
sary.
subgrade' Preparation: Areas to receive,structures, pavements, or'
structural fill should be stripped of any vegetation and-highly
organic topsoil. The stripped material should not be incor-'
porated into structural fills. It is. estimated that the organic
topsoils will be approximately three inches deep. After topsoil
removal, the exposed ground should be 'scarified to adepth of six,
to 'eight inches, brought to approximately optimum moisture
conditions, and compacted to At least 90percent relative compac-
tion,based on ASTM D1557 (modified Proctor). In areas where
larger trees and'existing structures are removed, deeper soils
may 'be disturbed. The disturbed soils should be removed to the
depth at which firm formational material, is exposed. The resuit-
ing excavation should filled with uniformly compacted lifts of
fill. Construction debris and vegetation should not be used' in
on-site fills
Imported Fill: Fill imported •o the Site should consist predom-
inately of sand and should contain no rocks larger than six
inches." The expansive index of import should not' be grater than
20, based on Uniform Building Code Standard No 29-2 Except for
any highly organic 'topsoil, 'the, existing site soil is considered
suitable for reuse as structural fill.

Foundations should be at least 12 inches in width and should be

report are complied with, total settlements are expected to be

On Grade Slabs: A conventional on-grade slab is considered
suitable for use on site Design of on-grade slabs may be based
on a subgrade modulus of 300 kips per cubic foot The minimum
.slab thickness recommended is four inches. Because of normal
1 soil variatiion and the typical concrete shrinkage which should
- be -expected, slab reinforcement is-recommended.. In-moisture -
I sensitive areas,, moisture proteàtion. beneath the slab should be.

FIELD EXPLORATION
A field exploration was performed on August 27, 1988, and con-
sisted of a site reconnaissance, and performing subsurface
exploration. Tto exploration borings were made at the locations,
approximately shown on Figure 1. The boxings were made using a
