I Comments: Penetrations in existing Concrete Block (CMU) Walls
Based on our site meeting yesterday with Kevin Yeoman of Leak Technologies, it is understood
that the return water lines from the pool need to be rerouted to the pool equipment room. The pool
is adjacent to the western portion of the partial subterranean parking garage, which is about 5ft
lower than the pool deck. The pool equipment room. is located at the back of the laundry room,
adjacent to the western parking area, and is bordered by CMU walls.
In order to provide a practical path of the water lines from the pool to the pool equipment room, the
lines will need to pass thru a load bearing CMU wall at two locations. It is understood that either
two '4" inch holes or one 6" hole will be required in each of the CMU walls. This is structurally
acceptable as long, as the holes are made in CMU cells that do not contain vertical or horizontal
reinforcement. The horizontal bond beams will easily bridge the holes and spread the bearing
loads tributary to the wall around the holes-and ultimately to the foundation, without compromising
the structural capacity or integrity of the walls. The CMU. walls appear to be 8" block, and likely
have vertical reinforcement at either 16" or 24" on center. The horizontal reinforcement is likely at
24 or 48" on céntOr.
In order to verify that the desired hole locations are not reinforced, a testing firm needs to be hired
to non-invasively test the wall locations for reinforcement ,A company that I have had personal
experience with and. recommend is Advanced Radar Technology at 619-303-2321, and they have a
websité easily.fOund with a Google search if you need more info. '
In summary, it is my opinion that the CMU walls of concern will not be adversely affected by the
new proposed holes as long as they are made in the center ,of a CMU cell that does, not contain.
