Mr. Dave Peterson
1750 South Mammoth Place
Escondido, California 92029
Dear Mr. Peterson:
The purpose of this letter is to summarize observations
concerning the depth-to-natural ground in the rear-yard of
the above-captioned site.
Two exploratory test pits were excavated by others on the
south (rear) side of the existing house. Both pits were
located approximately 8 feet south of the south side of the
house, with Pit No. 1 being along the (projected) west line,
and Pit No. 2 being along the (projected) east line.
Observations were made on January 21, 1993.
In Pit No. 1, the fill/natural contact was found at 6.5.. feet
below the existing ground surface. Total pit depth was 8.5
feet.
In Pit No. 2, the fill/natural contact was found at 4.0 feet
below the existing -ground surface. Total pit depth was 5.0
feet.
Natural formational soils (bedrock) encountered in each of
these pits is correlated with the approximately 40- to
50-million years old (Eocene-age) Santiago Formation. These
nearly flat-lying sedimentary strata were found to be
composed of well-consolidated, firm, dense, light- to
medium-gray and tan (with local yellow and orange staining)

silty claystone and clayey siltstone. Judging from
experience and observations made at the site (the clays are
,very lean) it is my opinion that their expansion
characteristics would likely fall into the low to possibly
, medium category.
Based upon the information presented herein, it is my
opinion that the firm, natural, undisturbed bedrock
formation, the Santiago Formation, should provide adequate
vertical bearing support for properly designed and
constructed foundations.
1 It is understood that standard Uniform Building Code design
criteria are to be used in place of obtaining design
parameters from a site-specific Geotechnical investigation.
Should you have any questions, please write, or call me at

Respectfully submitted,
