rem JOHN S. MURK ENGINEERS
Job NO. A8-1
July 14, 1982
Mr. Jan Plumb Plumb Construction 231 Countryhaven Road Encinitas, California 92024
Re: Moisture Content Analysis: 2511 Abedul, Lot #82 Carlsbad, California
Dear Mr. Plumb:
Pursuant to your verbal request of June 30, 1982, we took representative
moisture content of the soil. We further reviewed the soils samples from the subject property for laboratory determination of the
investigations prepared by Benton Engineering for subject lot, (report to LaCosta Land Company dated October 12, 1971).
The soils comprising the lot is considered critically expansive (referred to as Type A in the Benton report), and as such requires a moisture content of 1 to 3 percent greater than optimum prior to the placement of
footings.
on July 7, 1982 averaged 18.1% (with individual values of 17.8% and The moisture content as determined by our first series of analyses taken
18.3%). The optimum moisture content for this lot was determined to be 9.8% in the upper three feet.
Due to the relatively high moisture content of the soil, a second analysis was made on July 13, 1982 and a moisture content of 15.5% was found.
Given the time lag between the second field test and the actual placement of footings and slabs, it is our opinion that the 15.5% moisture content of the soil as tested will satisfactorily meet the moisture content criteria specified in the above referenced Benton report.

Avoid the USB of isaloted interior piers. Use continuous footings throughout,
ond place these at a minimum depth of two feet below the lowest odjaccnt

""-
Exercise every effort to assure that the soil under the foundations and sldk ha
a uniform moisiure content, 1 percent to 3perccnt greater than optimum thmL
out the top 3 feet below finished gmde at the time of placing foundations and
slabs.
Use raised wooden floors that spon between continuous footings, or use all
concrete slabs with 6 x 5 - 10/10 welded wire fabric and provide o minimum
of 4 inches of clean sand beneath oll concrete slobs. A.moisture barrier
should be provided,in ihe sand layer 2 inches below slabs under living areas.
Scporote garoge slabs.fram perinieter footings by o 1/2 inch thickness of con-
struction felt or equivalent, to allovr independent n;ovenent of garage slab
relative to perimeter footings. Assure comprete saparction by extending the
felt over the full depth of the front thickened edge oi the garage slab. Also,
cut off the garoge door stops at least 1/2 inch above .the slub.
... Provide positive droinage owoy from all perimeter Footings to a horizontal
distance of ot least 6 feet oukide the house wolls.
