There is also privacy fencing on all sides. First I am told that the end of a 300 foot driveway constitutes my "front yard" and that any structure has to be 20 feet from the edge of my "front yard". Of course no one can even see this supposed front yard, but a 20 foot setback would put a portable building too close to the front of the house. To accommodate this completely unreasonable rule, I moved it to the side yard, which is at the bottom of a slope and REALLY hidden from anyone. Unless you had a drone, you could not see what was going on in the side yard. But this too 1 violates the "law" in that I have a retaining wall and the building can't be 10 feet away from the side of the house without encroaching on the retaining wall. My neighbors have the same slope with no retaining wall, so perhaps they could just move the slope in and put the building there. However, l"m sure the City would also not want me to remove my retaining wall, needed or not, so that option is out. So end result, I have a lot that is twice the size of a typical lot in Carlsbad, and cannot use any of it for a shed. When I retire next year, I will take this up with the Planning Commission and/or the City Council, but in the meantime I don't have time to deal with these types of arbitrary rules, I appreciate the courtesy of the people at the Planning and Building Permit counters. Theirs must be a very difficult job. You can consider my request for a Building Permit closed. Margaret J.
