Optional Considerations V
The following specifications are sometimes deSired. They are
covered here—briefly—for your consideration and convenience.
Preservative Treatment ,
When the conditions of service are such that pressure Preserva-
tive treatment to prevent' attack by fungi or insects is required,
information such as the following should be given in your specifi-
cation:
The preservative shall' be
The retention shall be
(Note: Refer to AITC 109 "Treating Standard for Structural
Timber Framing" for complete data.)
Hardware'
The fabricator shall furnish connection steel and hardware for
joining timber members to each other and to their supports ex-
clusive of anchorage embedded in masonry, setting plates, and
items field-welded to structural steel. Metal shapes to have one
coat of shop applied paint containing rust inhibitor.
UALITY CONTROL AND INSPECTION
Specifying quality inspected materials to assure consistent
and dependable structural glued laminated timber is a pro-
fessional responsibility. The AITC program is based on Vol-
untary Product Standard PS 56-73 and the INSPECTION
MANUAL, AITC 200.
APPEARANCE GRADES
Rf materials, finishes
Three appearance ,grades -Industrial. Architectural and Pre-
mium—have a sufficient range to fulfill all use requirements.
These grades apply to the surfaces of glued laminated mem-
bers' and include such items as growth characteristics.- in-
serts, wood fillers and surfacing operations. The appearance
grades do not apply to laminating procedures, decorative or
other finishes, or to protective coverings. They do not modify
the design stress, fabrication controls, grades of lumber used,
or other provisions of the standards for glued laminated struc-
tural members. In specifying appearance grades it is neces-
sary only to state the desired grade without detailed specifi-
cations. '
For detailed information on appearance grade specifications.
refer to AITC Spec-Data Sheet on Structural Glued Laminated
Timber. '
FINISHES AND, COATINGS
EITi coatings. surfacings V
Available finishes for glued laminated timber include surface
sealers, stains and paints. Surface sealers increase resis-
tance to soiling, control grain raising, minimize checking and
serve as a moisture retardant. Surface sealers fall into two
classifications. Penetrating sealers provide limited protection
and are suitable for use when final finish requires staining or
a natural finish. Primer and sealer coats provide maximum
protection by sealing the surface-of the wood. Primer and
sealer coats should not be specified when the final finish re-
quires a natural or stained finish.

I. The tabulated stresses In this table are-prImarily
appiicabla to members stressed in binding du to
load applied perpendicular to The wide face of
the lamwl.ation$, Fo, combinations and stresses ap-
plicable to members loaded gr in)aClty azially or
parallel to wide !ace of the laminations. see Table 2.
3. The tabulated bending stresses an applicable it
members 12 inches Of less in depth. For members
greater than 12 Inches in depth. the sill factor
mod,6ca11ons apply.
3. The tabulated combinations are applicable to arches,
compression members, tension members and also
bending Members less that. 16¼ inches I. depth.
For bending members 16%4, inches or more in depth.
AITC tension lamination restrictions. apply.

S. The tabulated stresses in This table are primarily
applicable to members loaded axially or parallel to
- the wide face of the laminations. For combinations
and stresses applicable to members stressed Prin-
cipally in bending due to load applied perpendicu-
lar to the wide face of the laminations, see Table 1.
The tabulated stresses are applicable to members
containing four (4) or more lamiflations.
The tabulated stresses are applicable to members
containing three (3) or more laminations.
S. it Is not Intended that these combinations be used
for deep bending members, but if bending membef
1614 inches or deeper are used. AITC tension lam-
inition restrictions apply.
STANDARD SIZES
risl technical support
To the extent that other considera-
tions will permit, the finished sizes
of structural glued laminated tim-
ber as given in the Section Proper-
ties table constitute normal indus-
try practice.' Industry standards
do, however, permit the use of
any width of glued laminated
timber. Dimension lumber of 11/2
inch net thickness is normally used
to laminate straight members and.
those curved members. having radii
of curvature within the bending
radius limitations for the species.
Boards of 3/4 inch net thickness
are recommended for laminating
curved members when the bend
ing radius is too short to permit the
use of dimension lumber, prOvided
the bending radius limitations for
the species are observed. Other
lamination thicknesses may be
used to obtain the specified depth
of the member or to meet special
requirements.
When the depth of a rectangular
beam exceeds 12 inches, the al-
I owable unit stress in bending must
be reduced by multiplication by a,
size factor. The size factor values
given in 'the' Section Properties
table are based on the formula and
basic assumptions given on pages
6 and 7.
' Weight per linear' foot of section
may be determined by multiplying
the volume per linear foot by the
following values - Douglas fir 'and

time the application is submitted.
If a service lateral is required, it will be installed by the Leucadia County Water
District. The service lateral is that part f? the sewer system that extends from
the main collection line in the street (or easement) to the point in the street (at
or near the applicant's property line) where the service lateral is connected to
the applicant's building sewer. The applicant is responsible for the construction,

service will begin and covers the balance of the fiscal year. There will be no
additional fee or refund if service actually commences on a different date. For
succeeding fiscal years, the sewer service fee will be collected on the tax roll
in the same manner as property taxes.

An application for a building permit has been submitted in your rme listing yourself
as the builder of the property uruprovenents specified. For your protection you should be
aware that as "owner-builder'! you are the responsible party of record on such a permit.
Building permits are not requixed to be signed by the property owners unless they are
personally. performing their own work. If your work is being performed by someone other
than Yourself' you may protect yourself from possible liability if that person applies for
the proper permit in his or her name.
Contractors are required by law to be licensed and bonded by the State of California and
to have a business license from the City of Carlsbad. They are also required by law to
put their license number on all permits for which they apply.
If you plan to do your own work, with the exception of various trades that you plan to
subcntract, you should be aware of the following information for your benefit and pro-
tection.. If you employ or otherwise engage any persons other than your immediate family,
and the work (including material and other costs) is $200 or more for the entire project,
and such persons are not licensed as contractors or subcontractors, then you may be an em-
ployer. If you are an employer, you must register with the state and federal government
as an employer and you are subject to several obligations including state and federal
income withholding, federal social security taxes, workers' compensation insurance, dis-
ability insurance costs, and unemployment contributions. There may be financial risks
for you if you do not carry out these obligations, and these risks are especially serious
with respect to workers' compensation insurance.
For specific information about your obligations under federal law, contact the Internal
Revenue Service (and, if you wish, the U. S. Snail Business Administration). For more
specific information about your obligations under state law, contact the Department of
Benefit Payments and the Division of Industrial Accidents.
If the structure is intended for sale, property owners who are not licensed contractors
are allowed to perform their work personally or through their own employees, without
a licensed contractor or subcontractor, only under limited conditions.
A frequent practice of unlicensed persons professing to be contractors is to secure an
"owner-builder" building permit, erroneously implying that the property owner is providing
his or her own bFor and material personally. Building permits are not required to be
signed by property owners unless they are performing their own work personally. Informa-
tion about licensed contractors may be obtained by contacting the Contractors State
License Board in your camtunity or at 1020 N Street, Sacramento, CA. 95814.
PLEASE CQIETE AND RETURN THE ENCIOM OER-BUIEDER VERIFICATION FORM so THAT WE CAN
CONFIRM. THAT YOU ARE ARE CF THESE MATTERS. THE BUIIDThIG PERMIT WILL NOT BE ISSUE)
UNTIL THE VERIFICATION IS RETURNED.
