With respect to HVAC-DCS Figure 5-5, CEAS Wedgy Cable Support System referenced above may be adapted to any of the illustrated support configurations except the two- tier trapeze method in the lower right. This adaptation also applies to the strut channel support in Figure 5-6. Wire rope support of trapeze bars for oval duct suspension relative to the HVAC-DCS specification S3.18 is acceptable. Wire rope passed continuously under round and rectangular duct (with both ends attached overhead) is acceptable provided that duct shape is retained and points on contact with the duct are not overstressed. Use of stress distribution saddles shall be prescribed as necessary. The HVAC-DCS Table 5-1 and 5-1M maximum hanger spacing of 10 feet and Table 5-2 maximum spacing of 12 feet shall be maintained (and decreased as necessary to conform to CEAS Wedgy Cable Support System working load limits). 1 Since Chapter 5 of the HVAC-DCS has prescribed uses and limits on duct size for single wire supports and the CEAS Wedgy Cable Support System uses wire rope that have larger load capacity, use is not restricted to the HVAC-DCS diametrical limits for single wires. When CEAS allows its hanger wire to be in a non-vertical orientation, it shall, in accordance with accepted engineering practice, provide users with adjustments to its allowable loads and, as necessary to conform to manufacturer's recommendations, approve the method of transfer of loadings to supporting and supported members. This stipulation shall not be construed as preempting any duty of an installer to obtain approval of the support system by an appropriate authority prior to making the installation. The SMACNA HVAC-DCS does not specifically provide for non-vertical hanger systems. Criteria for use of CEAS Wedgy Cable Support System for support of risers are not included in this verification. CEAS submitted their Wedgy Cable Support System which consisted of: A system with the following components: a galvanized steel wire rope, a preformed loop created and maintained thereon by a manufacturer supplied and attached ferrule typically connected to a 600 Series Fastener Assembly and attachable loop fixing metal grip (WEDGY1, WEDGY2, FASTLINK1 and FASTLINK2). A system with the following components: a galvanized steel wire rope, a preformed loop created and maintained thereon by a manufacturer supplied and attached ferrule typically connected to a 600 Series Fastener Assembly and an attachable end fixing metal grip (SW2, SWP2, DSC, DSCL2, or DSCU2). Each system was supplied with suitably matched, compatible load rated components with load rating performance data conducted by an accredited testing laboratory. The SMACNA Testing & Research Institute conducted a comprehensive evaluation of the submittal as an acceptable alternative for use with the SMACNA HVAC Duct Construction Standard - Metal & Flexible, 3rd edition. This analysis included: minimum and maximum working load ranges that will prevent slip and separation of components of the systems; breaking strength of the wire rope; load test results for wire rope systems and failure load tests. SEISMIC BRACING NOTES HVAC DUCT AND MECHANICAL COMPONENTS 1. In compliance with the 2013 CBC, seismic bracing is to be installed on all suspended HVAC duct runs and mechanical components per ISAT's engineered bracing tables, ISAT's installation details and the following criteria. Where component l, = 1.0, seismic restraints are not required for: Components weighing 20 lbs (75 lbs, OSSC) or distributed systems < 5 lb/If (lv, 1.0, CBC) having flexible connections between equipment and associated utilities. Floor supported components weighing less than 400 lbs., with a center of mass located 4 ft or less above the adjacent floor, the component is attached via flexible connections between itself and associated utilities (conduit, piping, etc.) and the component is positively attached to the floor (ASCE 7-10, 13.1.4 -6.c.) except components requiring Special Seismic Certification (2013 CBC, 1616.10.15). 3. Components that are installed in-line with the duct system and have an operating weight greater than 75 lbs (334N), such as fans, heat exchangers and humidifiers, shall be supported and laterally braced independent of the duct system. 4. Un-braced piping attached to in-line components shall be provided with flexible connections. 5. Bracing for suspended components installed in-line with the duct system is not required where the operating weight is < 75 lbs. unless: The components convey, support or otherwise contain toxic, highly toxic or explosive substances, flammable gasses or are used for smoke control. (ASCE 7-10, Sec. 13.6.7) The component is a "Designated Seismic System" (Ip >1.0) (ASCE 7-10, Sec. 13.2.2) and is within or attached to a Risk Category IV structure. (ASCE 7-10, Sec. 13.1.3). The load path from the component to the structure is to be per the equipment seismic qualification and the manufacturer's instructions. Where such guidance does not exist for a Designated Seismic System, engineered restraints are to be provided. (ASCE 7-10, Sec. C13.6.5.5). 7. For Seismic Design Categories C thru F, seismic restraints are not required for duct components if the following conditions are met for the full length of the run: The duct is supported by hangers 12 in. or less in length from the duct support point to the overhead supporting structure. When rod hangers are used (>3/8" dia., CBC), they shall be equipped with swivels, eye nuts, or other devices to prevent inelastic bending in the rod. 8. Where bracing is allowed to be omitted: Flexible connections are required between any fixed juncture or component and the connecting HVAC duct. Provisions are to be made to avoid impact with larger ducts or mechanical components or to protect the ducts in the event of impact. 9. All trapeze assemblies supporting ducts shall be braced considering the total weight of the duct(s) and insulation on the trapeze. If the actual weight of the duct is unknown, refer to Duct Weight Charts, Section X. 10. Plastic or fiberglass ductwork shall be braced at one-half the spacing identified in the [SAT bracing charts for the equivalent weight metal duct. 11. All seismic bracing assemblies shall utilize ISAT supplied, proprietary seismic brackets unless noted otherwise. No Substitutions Allowed. Use of any substitute bracket voids all engineering. Refer to individual ISAT bracing charts compiled by duct trapeze weight. See Index Page C.O. Every HVAC duct run which requires bracing shall have a minimum of two transverse braces and one longitudinal brace. For the purposes of this Manual, a run is defined as a suspended element of 10 foot minimum straight length. A transverse brace shall be installed on one side of a horizontal 90 degree change in duct direction. A transverse brace may act as a longitudinal brace if it is located within two duct widths of a 90 degree change in direction, if the brace arm and anchor have been sized to meet or exceed the requirements of the longitudinal brace and the transverse brace is installed on the larger of the.two ducts or as engineered by ISAT technical support. A longitudinal brace may act as a transverse brace if it is located within two duct widths of a 90 degree change in direction, if the brace arm and anchor have been sized to meet or exceed the requirements of the transverse brace and the longitudinal brace is installed on the larger of the two ducts or as engineered by ISAT technical support. See page 12.1 for special inspection requirements. Flexible connections at walls are not allowed as Transverse Brace locations. Where a duct passes through a wall may be considered a transverse brace location provided the duct is tightly constrained and it is a rigid connection. The ability of a breakaway smoke damper to act as a transverse brace location is to be evaluated on a case-by-case basis. The Engineer of Record or the Project Architect must verify the ability of the wall to accommodate the transverse seismic load. Vertical support spacing for trapeze mounted duct is to be the lesser of 10 foot maximum, or the maximum as dictated by the International Mechanical Code, as listed in the project specifications, or as allowed by the local code authority. Each layer of a multi-layer trapeze rack shall be braced individually based on the weight of the individual layer, or as specifically engineered by ISAT. Layers supporting loads < 10 lbs/If need not be braced provided that the load is accounted for in the nearest braced layer. The lateral seismic restraint and the vertical support shall be engineered on an individual project basis. Vertical risers which are mechanically attached to floors at the point of penetration are considered a transverse and longitudinal brace location when the supports and anchorages are sized to accommodate the lateral load. When used to construct a rigid brace arm assembly, minimum 12 gauge steel channel shall be solid. Punched or short slot channel may be used provided the reduced brace arm design values on Page El are accounted for. VIBRATION ISOLATED HVAC DUCT AND MECHANICAL COMPONENTS ISAT includes designs for the seismic restraint of vibration isolated duct suspended from spring hangers. However, design of the vibration isolated support system itself must be accomplished separately on a job specific basis by a qualified engineer. Install vibration isolation hardware per manufacturer's instructions to achieve the required degree of isolation and/or deflection. Vibration isolated hangers that also require seismic bracing shall be braced using galvanized steel cable or minimum 12 gage hanging wire tied to ISAT designed and tested seismic brackets. Cable to be installed with sufficient slack to accommodate, but not exceed, the vibration isolators calculated deflection. See manufacturer's vibration isolator specifications. Do not tension cables to the extent that they support gravity loads. Cable installation is to be symmetrical.
