ILLINOIS 60473 TELEPHONE (312) 339.5270 October 30, 1989 Ready Metal Manufacturing Co. 4500 West 47th Street Chicago, Illinois 60632 Attn: Mr. David Chang Re: Z4ALL Upright Load Tables APEX Upright Load Tables Dear Client: Bound herewith are load tables for Z-WALL and APEX Uprights used in Ready Metal display systems in Seismic Zones 2 and 4, along with a detailed record of the calculations. The Z-WALL tables may be found on pages 4 and 5 pertaining to Seismic Zones 2 and 4, 'respectively. Likewise,'the APEX tables may be found on pages 9 and 10. In each case, the tables have entries for 10, 12, and 14 foot high systems supported top and bottom, like partitions, by the surrounding building. Seismic Zone 2 refers to regions of moderate seismicity, Zone 4 to regions of very high seismicity. The tables indicate the loads that may be safely supported by the uprights. Eccentricity refers to the distance from the face of the Z-Upright to the center'of action of the applied load. Loads are tabulated for two eccentricities, 8" and 17". Interpolation is appropriate for intermediate eccentricities. _ Where the applied load is well and evenly dispersed, the uniform load marked''W' in the tables is appropriate. The concentrated load 'P' is a lower bound on the capacity governing a single load placed in an unfavorable location. Load 'P' may be used to quickly justify situations where the load is definitely not uniform. There are clearly many combinations of load placement and magnitude that fall between these two extremes, and in some cases a load greater than load 'P' can be allowed. If needed, these specific cases can be individually analysed when the appropriate entry does not appear in the tables. The tables pertain to the upright (stud -like) components only. It is contemplated that these stud -like components will be fitted with-Ready.Meta1 continuous runner channels at the top and bottom of the partition -like assembly. The uprights will be furnished with Ready Metal bridging in continuous horizontal rows, and with Ready Metal surfacing panels -You have informed us that the effectiveness of these accessories is well: known from ample experience and/or can be demonstrated by physical testing.- Consideration of the accessories used to deliver the loads to the uprights and their fastenings is not within the scope of this report. The horizontal reactions to be resisted by the building are given in the tables, but again, the accessories used to deliver the reactions 'to the building and consideration of the influence of the reactions upon the building are beyond the scope of this report. The section properties used in the analysis have been derived from information furnished by Ready Metal. It is assumed that the steel used in the fabrication of the components has the chemical and physical properties suitable for load -carrying members and a minimum yield strength Fy not less than 28,000 psi. Our analysis is based on widely accepted principles of mechanics and strength of materials in accordance with the SPECIFICATION FOR THE DESIGN OF COLD -FORMED STEEL STRUCTURAL MEMBERS published by the American Iron and Steel Institute. The describing lateral force coefficients 'ZI and 'Cp' have been applied to the full dead and live load. The values of 'Z' and 'Cp' of used in the analysis are consistent with the UBC and BOCA model building codes. Very truly yours; v Thomas S. Blumcraft's•assembly to the base makes the base and glass act as a.rigid assembly so that the base adds to the stiffness of the glass. Thus, the calculations given for the glass are conservative. However; for conservatism and simplicity in the calculations below, the glass will. be assumed to be simply supported by a rigidly mounted base. Thus, only one side of the base channel will be .assumed to give support.. J GUARD RAIL CALCULATIONS FOR CONCENTRATED LOAD Calculations are based on a minimum 4' long section of rail. It is assumed that all railing systems shall have a top rail so that_ all panels of glass shall bend as one unit,, even if the individual panels are less than 4' long. 'The most conservative case is that where the rail is free standing., with no wal-1 return for the top rail. Calculations are based on a 42" high glass rail, cantilevered about the base, with an applied load of 200# and 300# at the top of the rail. I. With regard to the detail requirements, please refer to the applicable specifications as indicated. 1) Our test report is divided into thres sections. Design calculations are .furnished in Attachment 3 while Attachments 1 and 2 are reports of actual physical tests which corroborate the design calculation§. 2) The allowable design stress indicated in the report is given as, 17,200 p-si'.- This figure already includes a §afety factor because this figure corresponds to,a-breakage-rate of .8-lites per thousand. The published figgure for the rupture strength of tempered glass is 23,000 psi so that a safety facto-r of 4 indicates the design stress is 5750 psi. 3) Since the length or span of the railing is not indicated in the ASTM spec, we assume a four foot (4') rail span. This makes the 200# concentrated load and the 50 plf load equivalent Our practice is to reinforce any rail shorter than this by turning a corner or returning to a wall. 4) The calculations included in the report are based on 50 plf horizontal and 100 plf applied simulta- neously so the s-pecification is exceeded. Our report indicates the allowable stress is 5750 psi -- 'for a reducad loading condition and the ASTM specification allows a -deflection of 42'.'/24 + 48"/96 = 2.25" based on a 42"-rail height.
