PURPOSE The purpose of this project was to evaluate the performance of extruded woodfibre-plastic composite profiles against termite and fungal attack, as well as to determine the water absorption property of such composites. CONCLUSIONS TERMITE EXPOSURE: -Termite mortality rate was heavy for all composite samples. Compared to wood, all composite samples were highly resistant to termites. -The weight loss was marginal due to termite exposure (0 to 0.8%). FUNGAL EXPOSURE: -There was practically no change in weight of composite samples due to fungal exposure. While control wood sample incurred a 5% loss in weight due to fungal attack.MOlSTURE ABSORPTION: -Dimensional changes of all composite samples were marginal compared to the control wood sample. -The control wood sample absorbed more than 100% moisture while Nexwood absorbed the minimum moisture (1.2%) following 24 h boiling in water. • It is clear from these results that all four Nexwood samples are highly resistant to moisture absorption, as well as to termite and fungal attack, as measured by mass loss. The termite and fungal attack on composites had no appreciable effect on flexural strength and modulus. The composites outperformed solid wood in resistance to moisture, termites and fungi. Weathering Report - Nexwood ~~~~~~ The following are exerptsfrom report No. 97-J23-3397-13 (Accelerated Weathering of Nexwood Samples) For Nexwood Industries Ltd. Introduction Fourteen Nexwood samples were submitted for accelerated weathering. The samples were exposed in a weatherometer operated in accordance with the procedures detailed in ASTM G 26-95, in a conditioned room for periods of 250, 500, 750, and 1000 hours. Results In all cases, the exposed samples showed a mild colour change. In all cases the colour is slightly whiter after exposure. Most of the colour change had occurred in the first 250 hours of exposure although the colour did continue to change minimally throughout the exposure. Visual comparison with the unexposed control samples showed no apparent change in gloss on any of the exposed samples. There was no apparent checking or chalking on the samples. The strength of the samples differed slightly between those exposed for a period of 250 hours and those exposed for 1000 hours. The samples that were exposed for periods of 1000 hours still maintained high values for Flexural Strength and Flexural Modulus.
