The field moisture content November 12, 1992 - W.O. #P-1300 Page 3 was'determined as a percentage of the dry unit weight Both are shown on the enclosed Laboratory Test Results This information is useful in providing a gross picture of the soil consistency between exploratory excavations and any local variations Maximum Dry-Density/Optimum Moisture Content The maximum dry density and optimum moisture content were determined for selected samples of earth materials taken from the site The laboratory standard tests were in accordance with ASTM D-1557-78 The results of the tests are presented in Appendix "A" - GEOTECHNICAL CONDITIONS Artificial-Fill - Approximately T 2 0 feet of,'fill underlies the concrete patio slab, adjacent to the western stem wall footing for the garage The fill is probably locally derived sandy deposits Soil In the vicinity of .th exploratory test pits, approximately 12 inches of Soil is resent. The soil is classified as dry to • slightly moist silty sánd in a loose condition. Terrace Deposits- - The subject property is underlain by poorly consolidated • November 12, 1992 - W.O. #P-1300 Page 4 Pleistocene terrace deposits The sedimentary unit is composed of reddish brown silty and fine-grained sandstone In the vicinity of the exploratory test pits; the terrace deposits are dry and dense. - Expansive Sàils • The surficial deposits and underlying terrace deposits encountered on the site are predominantly granular deposits with an expansion • potential in the low range. Groundwater - No evidence of perched or shallow groundwater tables was encountered at the timel of this study. However, it is possible that minor seepage problems may occur after the proposed construction: These are-usually minor phenomena, often associated with over-irrigation and poor, drainage control. • Existing-Footings - The foundation along the western side of the garage includes a 2.0 foothigh stern wall. The stern wall supports approximately 2.0 feet of fill hich is • covered by a concrete •patio slab. Although exploration was not conducted in this area, it is likely that the garage footing is founded into the terrace deposits However, additional evaluation of the footing in this area should be .Conducted during the construction phase. • 0 01 -. • $_ 0 0 • • - November 12, 1992 W.O. #P-1300 - Page 5 iñ the vicinityof Test Pit No. 1, the garage footing is founded approximately 10 inches below grade and is about 11 inches wide. However, the upper 12 inches of earth materials is composed of loose soil. he base of the eastern garage footing is supported on a thin veneer of soil or resting on the soil/terrace deposit contact. • . CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS General . In thevicinity of-Test Pit Nos. 1 and 2, the existing footing is fouxded into soil or resting on the soil/sandstone contact. The- bearing value.indicated below may be used in the design analysis of -' the existing'. foundation. However, it is recommended that the existing fboting ' 'Along" the eastern side of the garage be underpinned by column pads or other methods recommended by the archifect where concentrated loads occur as a result of the second. .r • story addition; - Underpins should extend a minimum of 1.0 fodt below the base of the existing footing. The soil parameters presented below may beued in the design. Foündations I - - Proposed footingsshould penetrate fill and soil and be founded into the underlying competent terrace deposits. New footings for the propáed structure should be a minimum of 12 inches wide and V November 12, 1992 V W.O. #P-1300 Page 6 founded a minimum of 12 or 18 inches into the underlying competent - terrace deposits for single and two-story additions, respectively. Steel reinforcement should consist of a minimum of four No. 4 bars. Two of the No. 4 bars should be located 2.0 inches from the top of the footing and two located 3.0 inches from the base. Footings founded a minimum of 12 or 18 inches into competent terraáedeposits may be designed for a bearing value of 2000 pounds per square foot. V 'V. The bearing value, indicated above is for the total dead and frequently applied live loads This value may be increased by 33 percentfor short durations of loading, including the effects of wind .and seismic forces'., Resistance to la'teral' load may be provided by friction acting at the base of foundations and by passive earth pressure. A coefficient of friction of 0.35 may be used with dead-load forces. A passive' earth pressure of 250 pounds per square foot, per foot of.. depth of terrace deposits penetrated to a maximum of 2000 pounds may be used. V - q - Slabs on Grade'. • ',- V Slabs 'oii grade' should be a minimum of 4.0 inches thick and- reinforced in both directions with No. 3 bars placed 24 inches on center. The slabs should be underlain by a minimum 2.0-inch sand November 12, 1992 W.O. #P-1300 Page 7 blanket. Where moisture sensitive floors are used, a minimum 6;0 mil Visqueen or equivalent moisture barrier should be placed over the sand blanket and covered by an additional two inches of sand. Utility trnches underlyingthe slab may be backfilled with on-site granular .materials, compacted to a minimum of 90 percent of the - laboratory maximum dry density. However, sufficiently compacting the backfilLdeposits may damage or break shallow utility lines A such, minor settlement -of the backfill in the trenches is anticipated In order to reduce the possibility of cracks 'occurring, the slab should be provided with additional reiriforcement to bridge over trenches. Exterior concrete flatwork should be aminimum of 4.0 inches thick and reinforced with 6x6- 10x10 welded-wire fabric. All slab subgrades should be inspected by a representative' of this, firm. Additional recommendations may be 'necessary. • Plants and Irrigation Overirrigation adjacent to foundation areas can reduce the strength of the' sedimentary unit which supports structural footings. 'Numerous -roots were also encountered in our test pits adjacent to the foundations Roots and saturation of footing soils could result in distressed foundations In this regard, drainage .shbulabe directed away from foundations. Vegetation, if desired,. * should be-maintained-at least 2.0 feet from the foundation line and •. . . ,•,, •,. .. . November 12, 1992 W.O. #P-1300 Page 8 should consist of dtoüght resistant plants. Watering should. be limited to that amount necessary to sustain plant life. - . . Iixspectioñs and Density Testing - Structural footing. excavations should be inspected by a:. 'representative-of this firm, prior to the placement of steel. ..AdditionalexpForation.ôf the western garage footing should be conducted duing the construction phase. Fill, if necessary, should be placed while-a, representative of this firm is present to observe and test.' All fill should be compacted to a minimum of 90 percent Of the-laboratory maximum dry density.
