Mr. Ev Jenkins P. 3. Box 901 Solana Beach, CA 92075
SUBJECT: Report of Compaction Testing, Lot 723 of
La Costa Meadows Unit No. 4, Map No. 7367.
Carlsbad, California-.
Gentlemen:
In accordance with your request, we have performed compaction
tests on the compacted fill placed on the subject site. The
tests were performed from 30 September to 5 October, 1977,
during the grading operation. ‘l‘he results of the tests and
our findings are presented in this report.
Site grading consisted. of fill operations with imported soas
and some minor excavation work required to construct a multi-
level building pad area for the proposed residential structure.
The configuration of the graded site is shown on the attached
site plan Plate No. 1.
Prior to the placement of any fill, the areas to receive fill
were cleared of vegetation and 1a.rge rocks. Loose surficid
soils were scarified a minimum depth of six’ inches, moistened
and recompacted. Natural ground soils located in the toe area
of the proposed fill were excavated in order to provide a key

13 feet in maximum depth. The bottom of the key was heavily
moistened and the fill materials, consistingmight tan
sand (imported) and red brown silty. slightly clayey fine .sands,
native to the site, were moistened, placed in six to eighC
inch lifts and compacted to a minimum of 90% of the maximum
dry density as evidenced by the field in-place density tests
performed at the locations indicated on the attached Plate
No. 2. Compaction was achieved by track rolling with heavy
construction equipment.
Field density tests were performed according to A.S.T.M. Test
M@.thod D-1556-64. Moisture determinations were made or each
of the density tests. The results of the tests are presented
on the attached Plate No. 2.
Maximum dry density determinations were made on representative
soils used in the compacted fill. The tests were performed
according to A.S.T.M Test Method D-1557-70. The results of ' ,
these tests are presented on Plate No. 2.
F The prevailing foundation soils on the building .site are non-
detrimentally expansive consequent' to the grading operation
and conventional spread isolated or continuous footings may
be used for support of the proposed structure in lieu of the
previous recommendation for the original soil condition (. . ."Final Report on Compacted Filled Ground ...,and-Classif icatjon

Footings should be found.ed a minimum of 12 inches below low-
est adjacent grade and should be a minimum of 12 inches wide.
SDE 77-848 October 7 ,*. 1977 Page Three
Footings for 2-story structures should be founded 18 inches
below lowest adjacent grade and should be 15 inches in min-
imum width: Footings with the above minimum dimensions may
be designed for an dlowable soil bearing pressure of -1500 psf.
Structures that will not tolerate differentia settlements
(foundations, concrete decks, swimming pools, walls, etc.)
should not be located within 5 feet of the 'top edge of a
slope. Foundations located outside the 5 feet slope set-
back should be extended in depth such that the bottom out-
side edge of the footing is a minimum horizontal distance
of 5 feet from the slope face.
Provisions for draining water away from the proposed found-
ations, concrete flatwork and slopes should be included in
the development of 'the site. Drainage gradients should be
at least 2 percent.
Foundations soils, particularly in the garage area, should
be maintained in a moist to wet condition immediately prior
to placement of concrete. Footing excavations should be in-
spected by a representative of this office prior to pouring
concrete.
