SOIL TESTING
SDE 1968
October 6, 1980
Dave Murphy 3020 Azahar Court Carlsbad, CA 92008
SUBJECT: Report of Compaction Tests, Proposed Residential
Site, on Acuna Court, La Costa, California.
Gentlemen:
In accordance with your request, we have performed compaction tests
on the compacted fills placed on the subject site located on Lot 90
of Carlsbad Tract No. 754, La Costa Estates North, Map No. 8302.
The tests were performed from September 8 to October 2, 1980, during
the grading operation. The results of the tests and our findings
are presented in this report.
Site grading consisted of both cut and fill operations required to
construct a flat pad area for the proposed residential structure.
The configuration of the graded site is shown on the attached Plate
No. 1.
Prior to the placement of any fill, the areas to receive fill were
cleared of vegetation and debris. Loose surficial soils were'
scarified a minimum depth of six inches, moistened and recompacted.
The fill materials, consisting of red-brown slightly san<.y silty
clay and gravel native to the site and yellow brown silty sand, light
brown silty clayey sand and brown silty fine to medium grained
sand, which were imported to the site, were moistened, placed in six
to eight inch lifts and compacted to a minimum of 90% of the maximum
dry density as evidenced by the field in-place density tests performed
at the locations indicated on the attached Plate No. 1.
SDE i968 October 6, 1980 Page Two
Compaction was achieved with hea'iy construction equipment.
Field density tests were performed according to A.S.T.M. Test Method
D-1556-64. Moisture content determinations were made for each of the
density tests. The results of the tests are presented on the attached
Plate No. 2.
weQE maximum dry density determination3- made on representative soils
used in the compacted fill. The tesurres performed according to
A.S.T.M. Test Method D-1557-70. The results of the test are presented
on Plate No. 2.
NlM~
The expansion potential of the clay was evaluated by allowing an
"undisturbed" air-dried sample of the clay to swell against a vertical
load of 150 psf when brought into contact with water. The sample expan-
sion from the air dry to saturated conditions indicates the surficial
soils are highly expansive.
RECOMMENDATIONS
The following provisions are recommended for the design of foundations
for the proposed structure in order to reduce the probability of
structural damage due to expansive soil conditions.
Footings
All footings forthe proposed structure should be founded a
minimum depth of 24 inches below lowest adjazent finish grade
Footing widths should be 12 and 15 inches wiJe for single and
two story structures, respectively.
Both exterior and interior continuous footings for the structure
should be reinforced with 2 No. 4 bars positioned 3 inches clear
above the bottom of the footings and 2 No. 4 bars positioned 1*
inches clear below finish floor.
.. ..
. ' 'SDE!;1968 October 6, 1980 Page Three
Slabs
Interior slabs should be a minimum of 6 inches in thickness,
underlain by a 4 inch blanket of free-draining sand sandwiching
an impermeable (plastic) membrane and completely surrounded by
a continuous footing. The slabs should be reinforced with
6" x 6" - 6/6 welded wire mesh positioned at the center of the
slab cross-section.
Exterior slabs should be a minimum of 4 inches in thickness,
Walks or slabs 5 feet or less in width need not be reinforced.
Those exceeding 5 feet in width should be reinforced with
6" x 6" - 6/6 welded wire mesh positioned at the center of
the slab cross-section. Weakened plane joints should be pro-
vided for all exterior slabs as recommended in the figure
below.
T't
Moisture Control
ETA1 L
Clayey soils should not be allowed to dry before placement of
concrete thereon. They should be sprinkled if necessary to
insure that the soils are kept in a moist to wet condition
(3% minimum above the optimum moisture content).
.. ..
' ' SDE 1968 October 6, 1980 Page Four
Provisions for draining water away from the proposed
foundations and concrete flatwork should be included
in the development of the site. Drainage gradients
should be at least 2 percent.
Prior to the placement of concrete, the site should be
inspected by a representative of this office to establish
that the recommendations presented above have been followed.
If there are any questions regarding this report, please do not
hesitate to contact this office.
This opportuntiy to be of service is sincerely appreciated.

Mr. Murphy,
Submitted herewith is an addendum to the subject report of compaction
testing.
Foundation Setback
All foundations for structures shall be se.tback, minimum 5 feet from
the top edge of the slope. If building layouts necessitate placement
of foundations within the prescribed minimum setback, it is recommen-
ded that the foundations be deepened such that tbe bottom edge of the
foundations is setback minimum 5 feet from the face of the slope.
All other recommendations contained in the report. of soil investigation
