Gentlemen:
0 This is to report the results of tests and observations made in order to inspect the compaction of
round placed on certain areas of Lots 585 to 665, inclusive, 712 to 717, inclusive,
725, 26, 728, 729, 736, 737, 739, 740, and 742 and certain street oTeas of La Costa Mecdovo
No. 4 in Carlsbod, Califomio. The fills were ploced during the period between March 17,
1971 and May 10, 1973. Certain lots of this subdivision were not graded during the above period
and the classification of the expansivesoil conditions presented herein pertains only to !hose
lois groded to level building pods during this initio1 site development.
The approximate areas and depths of filled ground placed under our inspection in accordance
with the approved specifications are shoswn on the attached Drawing No. 1, entitled "Location
of Compacted Filled Ground." The grcding plan csed for the placement of filled ground NQS
prepared by Rick Engineering Conpony and approved May 18, 1971.
The oppraximate locations at which the tssh were taken ond thz fino1 test resulk are presented .) on pops 7-1 to 5-10, inclusive, under the "Toble of Test Results." The laboratory determiv
obions of the maximum dry densities ond optimum moisture contents of the major Fill materials
ore preset$ed on poses T-20 and T-21, under the "Loboro:ory Test Results." Some of tha maxi-
mum dry densities shown in the "Toble of Test Resulk" were combinoFions OF these. The tests
:yere tuken during the weekly periods indicated on the following page.

The final results of tests and obsewations indicate that the compacted filled ground hos been
placed at 90 percent of the maximum dry density or greater. It has been determined that the
fill materials, compacted to 90 percent of the maximum dry density, have a safe bearing value
of 1930 pounds per square foot for one foot wide continuous footings founded at a minimum
depth and placed five feet or more inside the top of compacted filled ground slopes. IF footings
are placed closer to the exposed slopes than 5 feet inside the top of compacted filled ground
slopes, these should be deepened one Foot below a 1 1/2 horizontal to 1 vertical line projected
outward and downward from a point 5 feet horizontolly inside the top OF compacted Filled
ground slopes. Tests indicate that the compacted filled ground is adequate to satisfactorily
support the proposed wood frome dwellings without detrimental settlements.
Expansive clay, silty clay, ond sandy clay soils were ploced in the upper three feet in certain
compccted fill areas and also exist in the upper three feet below finished grade in certain cut
oreos, The final clossificotims of the soil conditions existing on the level Sroded lot areas

713 to 717, inclusive

In order to minimize possible damaging effects due to differential movements of these poten-
tially expansive soils, the”fol1owing special dssign and precautions are recommended:
1. r
2.
3.
4.
5.
Avoid the use of isolated interior pien. .Use continuous interconnected
reinforced footings throughout, and place these at a minimum depth of
24 inches below the lowest adjacent exterior fino1 ground surface. Where
in-place rock conditions exist at shcllower depths, then leu depth of ex-
cavation is permissible to a minimum of 12 inches.
Reinforce and interconnect continuously with steel bars all interior ond
exterior footings with one #5 bar at 3 inches obove the bottom of the
footings and one #5 bar placed 1 1/2 inches below the top of the sterns
of the footings.
Raised wooden floors that span between continuous Footings are best, or
use concrete slabs reinforced with ot least 6x6-10/10 welded wire fabric.
A minimum of 4 inches oE crushed rack 3/4 to 1 inch in size should be
placed beneath all concrete slabs and covered with a moisture borriar. Two inches of clean sand should than be placed over the moisture barrier
and below the bottom of tha slab.
Separate garage slabs from perimeter footings by a 1/2 inch thickness of
construction felt or equivalent, to allow independent movement of garage
slabs relative to perimeter footings. Assure complete separotion by extend-
ing the felt over the full depth of the front thickened edge OF the garage
slab. Also, cut off the garage door stops at leost 1/2 inch above the SICS.
Provide positive drainage away from all perimeter footings with a vertical
fall of at least 5 inches in o hoi-izontal distance of 5 feet outside ,the house
walls.
