The above referenced property was visited to determine if the existing structural roof
framing was adequate to support a heavier roof covering.
The existing roof covering was wood shake installed over spaced lx sheathing. The roof
framing was prefabricated light weight truss over the second floor level and conventional
wood framing over the first floor level at the garage and front entry.
The new roof covering, that is intended to be installed, is a flat lightweight concrete tile
[Monier Lifetile-Madera]. The installed weight of the tile roof covering is less than 10.0
lbs. per sqft .. A ½ inch thick plywood or structural panel roof deck will need to be
installed to accommodate the tile roof covering.
The existing structural roof framing is adequate to support the additional weight of the
concrete tile roof covering and solid roof deck, with the exception of the 6Xl2 'dropped'
beam in the garage.
Structural modifications in the way of a 4x6 diagonal brace should be installed at each
end of the garage beam in order to reduce its effective span from 18 ft. to 14 ft. [See
attached structural detail]. With this modification complete, the roof framing should be
adequate to accept the new roof covering.
