Subject: GEOTECHNICAL INVESTIGATION
Proposed Building Additions
2624 Obelisco Place
Carlsbad, California
Dear Mr. & Mrs. Malewicz:
In accordance with your request, we have performed -a geotechnical
investigation at the subject site. Our investigation was-performed
in
'
December 1989. The purpose of ourinvestigation was to-evaluate
the - property with re'ipect -.to geotechni'cal conditions, and to
provide foundation -recommendations for, the proposed building
additions.
U With the above in mind,- our scope of 'services, incl'ded the
following:
_.o Review of available,., soil and geologic reports for the'site
vicinity'(see Ref erences);
Two hand 'excavated test, pits in the' area of the proposed
additions for visual observation and'soil/bedrock sampling;
Laboratory testing of samples obtained;
.-.o tngine.~ering ,analysis 'of the data;
The preparation of" this report presenting our findings,
conclusions, and foundation recommeridat ions.
SITE DESCRIPTION
The, subj ect site, located at 2624 Obelisco Place, Carlsbad,
at California consists, of* an irregul'arly.sha*ped residential lot the
ntly occupied by a two-story, single-family, wood-frame is prese
-..structure. The front portion of the~ property consists of a
driveway and" landscaped area'.', while the, rear and sideyard portions
of the property consist of landscaped ,areas with a swimming pool
and'patio in the back.

Page 2
The subject site is bounded by residential properties of higher
elevation to the south, lower elevation to the north, obelisco
Place to the west and Obelisco Circle to the east.
.PREVIOUS SITE GRADING
The subject lot was originally graded during June and July 1977.
According to the referenced "Report of 'Compaction Test Results. . . 11
(see References), grading of the site consisted generally of
cutting the southern 'portion of the lot and filling the northern
portion of the building pad area.. An approximate 5 feet high fill
slope was created descending down to natural site topography from
the northern limit of the building, pad.
Observation -and testing during grading was performed by San
D-ieguito 'Fill soils were reportedly placed in lifts,
moisture conditioned and compacted by mechanick means to at least
90 percent relative compaction in accordance with ASTM: D 15571-70.
PROPOSED DEVELOPMENT
-the residence We. understand that the proposed building.additions to
con'sist, of a bedroom to be located on the second-story at the
northeast corner of the existing structure along with a two-story
family and study room to be built out from the northwest portion of
~the existing structure.. A new deck.is also planned out from the
-northern wall of the structure east of and adjacent to the
family/study room addition. The structural outlines of the
-proposed additions are indicated on the attached Plot Plan, Figure
1. We also understand -that the proposed additions will be wood-
frame -with raised-wobd floors founded on new conventional
continuous/spread footings-for the family/study room and deck wh
'
ile
the 'new,,bedroom will be founded on existing continuous and new
spread footings. We anticipate that building loads will be t ypical
for this type of relatively light construction. Construction will
be.at about existing!site grades.
SUBSURFACE,EXPLORATION
Subsurface exploration consisted
'
of excavating two test pits to
depths of 4-1/2 to 5-1/2 feet below existing grades. The test pits.
were excavated~ manually. The approximate locations of the test
pits are shown on'the accompanying Plot Plan, Figure 1.

The. test pits were continuously logged during excavation
by a
geologist from this office, who. 'visually classified the soi
l
(Unified Soil Classification System),and obtained bulk samples fo
r
laboratory testing. The Logs of Test Pits are .presented on Figure
2.
LABORATORY TESTING
Laboratory. testing was, performed on samples obtained during t
h
e
subsurface. exploration. Tests performed', consisted of the
following:-
Dry Density and Moisture Content (ASTM: D 2216)
Direct Shear (ASTM: D 3080)
Results of the dry density and, moisture content determinations are
presented on the Logs of Test Pits, Figure 2. The remaining
laboratory tests, are presented on Figure 3.
SUBSURFACE CONDITIONS
The subsurface soils encountered in the two test pits consisted'of
fill soils to approximate depths of 3 feet in Test Pit *1 and,4,feet,
in Test Pit,2. The fill soils consisted generally of moist to w
e
t
,
loose, orange-brown to gray silty fine sand in'Test Pit 1 and
moist, stiff, red-brown fine sandy clayey silt with 'abunda
n
t
angular gravel
'
and cobble size clasts in Test Pit 2. The fill.
material -in Test 'Pit 1 is underlain by an approximately 2 feet
thick zone of apparently reworked colluvium. consisting of sligh
t
l
y
odoripherous, moist to' very moist, stiff, dark gray, fine sandy
clayey silt with abundant angular gravel to cobble size clasts and
some roots. The colluviun in Test Pit 1 and fill in Test Pit 2 is
underlain by weathered bedrock of the late Jurassic Santiago Peak
Vol-canics.
Although wet soils were found in Test Pit 1, no groundwater was
observed,.,in the test pits during our investigation. It should be
noted, however, that fluctuations in the amount and leve
l
o
f
groundwater may occur due to variations in rainfall, irrigatio

,
and other factors which may not have been evident at the time,o

our field investigation.*

SEISMICITY
The site is within, the seismically active southern California,
region. There are, however, no active or potentially active faults.
located within or, adjacent to the site. Active and potentially
~active, fault zones within the~ general site. region include the
Elsinore and the offshore extension of the,Rose Canyon, which are
located approximately ~3 miles and 7 miles from the site
respectively. Strong ground motion could also be expected from
earthquakes occurring along -the San Jacinto and San Andreas fault ,
zones, which lie northeast, of the si~bject site at distances of
-approximately 48 miles and 72 miles respectively. The San Clemente'
fault, which lies approximately 5.5 miles southwest of the site
offshore, as well as numerous other offshore faults, could'also
provide strong ground motion.
seismic risks on-site are limited to ground shaking during seismic
events on active faults in the region., The most significant
probable earthquake event to effect the property, would be a 7.0
magnitude earthquake on the Rose Canyon fault. Potentially,
repeatable horizontal .,accelerations on the order of 0 -28g are
possible with a duration of strong ground motion exce;ding 25
seconds. Peak (instantaneous) accelerations would be higher.,
CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
l.' General
Based on the results of our investigation, the proposed'
additions are feasible from a ge6technical standpoint~
Foundation plans should take into account the appropriate
geotechnical features of the site.
2. Foundations
The. proposed family/study room addition and any new fou
'
ndations
for -the second-story bedroom addition should be supported by
continuous/spread :footings founded. at least 18-inches into
'bedrock. We aii~icipate the foundation depths will range from 5
to 6 feet below existing grades. Existing.footings inthe area
of .the prbposed~ second-story bedroom addition are presumably
.founded in fill for which an allowable bearing pressure of 1500
pounds- pe . r square foot was previously recommended, (see
Reference 4). Additional loads on existing footings due to the*
second-story addition may result in settlementand pos.sible
damage to the structure. .,Such settlement and damage would

'4 bars, on . e.top and one bottom. Foundation excavations should
be inspected- by the-Geotechnical Engineer to ensure that, they
~are founded in suitable bearing materials...
Footings located-adjacent to slopes should extend to sufficient
depth to provide at least. 5 feetof horizontal cover between
the footing and the face,of the slope.w Due to the hard nature
of the' bedrock underlying the site, footing excavations may.
require jackhammering to achieve the proper footing depths.
3. Foundation Plan Review
Foundation ~plans should, be reviewed by the Geotechnical
Engineer. to, confirm conformance with the recommendations
presented herein. and 'to modify- the recommendations as
necessary.
LIMITATIONS
The' analyses, conclusions and rec'otmen'dat ions ' contained 'in this
repoft are based'on site conditions as they existed at the time of
our. investigation . and further assume -the excavations to 'be
representative of the subsurface co.nditions throughout the site.
