La Costa Avenue Carlsbad, California 92008 SOIL TESTING SUBJECT: Soil Compaction and Moisture Penetration Testing, Lot 81, La Costa South Unit No. 1, Carlsbad, Calif- ornia. .:;? t _j' ,f' ,,q A .:.ttJ ;ec A Gentlemen: In accordance with your request, we have performed compaction tests on the compacted fill and we have performed moisture pene- tration tests on the foundation soils on the subject site loca- ted at 2628 Mallorca Place, Carlsbad, California. The tests were performed on February 7, 8 and 14, 1977, The results of the tests are transmitted herein. Grading of the site consisted of minor cut a~d fill operations required to construct a flat pad area for the proposed residen- tial structure. '.i.'he configuration of the graded site is shown on the attached rough site plan (Plate No. 1). Prior to the placement of any fill, the areas to receive fill were cleared of vegetation and debris. The natural ground soils were scarified a minimum depth of six inches, moistened and re- compacted. The fill materials, consisting of light yellow brown clayey silt native to the site and light brown silty sand inported from off- SDE 440 February 15, 1977 Page Two site sources, were moistened, placed in six to eight inch lifts and compacted to a minimum of 90% of the maximum dry density as evidenced by the field in-place density tests performed at the locations indicated on the attached Plate No. 1. Compaction was achieved by rolling with heavy construction equipment. Field density tests were performed according to A.S.T.M. Test Method D-1556-64. Moisture determinations were made for each of the density tests. The results of the tests are presented on the attached Plate No, 2. ~iaximum dry density determinations were made on representative soils used in the compacted fill. The tests were performed accord- ing to A.S,T,M. Test Method D-1557-70, The results of these tests are presented on Plate No. 2. Moisture content determinations were performed on soil samples obtained from approximately J feet below rough finish pad grade in the cut portion of the lot subsequent to presoak operations. The test results, presented on the attached Plate No, 2, indic- ate the moisture content of the foundation soils on the building site has been established generally in accordance with the recomm- endations of Benton Engineering, Inc., for expansive soil condit- ions. The foundation soils should be maintained in the moist condition immediately prior to the placement of concrete thereon, Recommendations for foundations and slabs to be constructed on ex- pansive soils in the La Costa South Unit No, 1 have been prepared ' by Benton Engineering, Inc. If foatiros are pieced closer to the exposed slopes than 5 feet inside the top of compacted filled ground slopes, these shouid be deepened one foot below a 1 1/2 horizontal to 1 vertical line projeci'cd outward and downward from a point 5 feet horizontal I)' inside the lop of compocted filleJ ground slopes. Tests indicate that !he compacted fill,z,d ground is adequate to sotisloctorlly support the proposed one and two story wood frame dwel I iros without detrimenial settlements. In our report of the origi11al investigation conducted at this subdivision, (Proiect No. 68-2-2( dated Marc.h 8, 1968), we stated tf-,at some silty clay and sandy clay soils had been found on the site !hat were expar.siva, and we recomr. ended that each lot be inspected during or after grading to determine those lots in which rnch exp:msive soil$ exist within the upper 3.0 feet.
