APPLIED SOIL MECHANICS FOUNDATIONS 5340 BUFFJN ROAD SAM DIEGO, CALIFORNIA 92123 PHILIP HENKING BENTON PRESIDENT - CIVIL ENGINEER September 9, 1980 TELEPHONE (714) 5«B 19S5 The Gregor Company 229 North El Camino Real Encinitas, California 92024 Subject:Project No. 80-8-27M Lot Inspection and Moisture Contents In Subgrade Soils, Lot 224 of La Costa Meadows Unit No. 1 Carlsbad, California Gentl em en This Is to report the results of our inspection of the subject lot and also to present the results of tests to determine the moisture contents of the soils in the upper three feet below finished grade in the proposed building area at the subject site in Carlsbad, California. An inspection was made by a representative of our organization on September 8, 1980. It is concluded that the soil conditions are essentially the same as presented in our report on the grading of this subdivision dated October 12, 1971. The soils in the upper three feet below finished grade were classified as Type A (critically expansive) and therefore/ the recommendations for special design and precautions presented in the above dated report should be incorporated in the plans and specifications for any proposed construction on this lot. Soil samples were also obtained on September 8, 1980 and the results of the moisture determinations are presented as follows: Approximate Location of Samples Southwesterly portion of proposed building area Northeasterly portion of proposed building area Depth Below Existing Grade In Feet 1.0 2.0 3.0 Moisture Content f/o dry wt) 28.7 25.3 23.9 / 1.0 27.3 2.0 26.7 Encountered rock at 2. 5 feet Pro'ecf No. 80-8-27M -2- September 9, 1980 The Gregor Company If is concluded From the field observations of the various soil types and the final results of / the moisture determinations that the soils m the upper 2,5 to 3,0 feet below Finished grade at the locations sampled have been sufficiently moistened to minimize the potential expansion of the soffs, as recommended In our report under Project No. 7Q-1Q-28D, dated October 12, 1971, It Is recommended that positive drainage, 6 Inches of vertical fall In 6 feet horizontally, should be provided around the perimeter of the house. Drainage systems should also be provided to collect all runoff from roofs and conduct the water In watertight pipes either into the streets or storm drains. All surface drainage should be prevented from ponding adjacent to or running over the tops of slopes. Inlet boxes and watertight pipes should be installed when necessary to comply with the above requirements. Respectfully submitted, BENTON ENGINEERING, INC. By R. C.
