Scope and Intent
The scope of work is limited to providing top and bottom rail supports for the
existing glass guards in place at the front entry staircase of the 2663 Cazadero
Drive residence (Fischer Family Residence).The intent of this evaluation and
analysis is to meet the City of Carlsbad Correction Notice requirement 1,dated
October 12, 2016.The top and bottom guard rails shall be designed to support a
200 pound concentrated load as required by the 2016 California Building Code
(CBC) section 1607.8.1.1.The attachment details presented indicate the minimum
required support and attachment to meet the CBC requirements.
Reference attachments: Guard Rail Support Details and Calculations and City of
Carlsbad Information.
As part of the evaluation, we also reviewed the following:
•California Residential Code (CRC) by the California Building Standards
commission and International Code Council, 2016 edition.
•Residential Construction Performance Guidelines for Professional Builders
& Remodelers by the National Association of Home Builders, Fourth
Edition.

period upon the initial commencement of work authorized by such permit.
Before such work can be recommenced, a new permit shall be obtained to do so, and the fee therefore shall be one half
the amount required for a new permit for such work, and provided that no changes have been made or will be made in
the original plans and specifications for such work, and provided further that such suspension or abandonment has not
exceeded one year.In order to renew action on a permit after expiration, the permittee shall pay a new permit fee.
Any permittee holding an unexpired permit may apply for an extension of time within which work may commence under
that permit when the permittee is unable to commence work within the time period required by this section for good and
satisfactory reasons.

Thank you for the photos. Per the attached Aluminum Stair Railing Plan, Sheet 1,Railing Sections, the detail drawing
specifies top and bottom glazing support, however, per the submitted photos the glazing support is shown on the sides
at both the stair and landing guard. The 2013 CBC,Section 2403.2," Where one or more sides of any pane of glass are
not firmly supported... detailed construction documents, shop drawings and analysis or test data assuring safe
performance for the specific installation shall be prepared by a registered design professional."
Sheet 1 of the Aluminum Stair Railing design is stamped and signed by an engineer that is licensed to practice
engineering in the state of Missouri.
Please submit two sets of stamped and signed detail drawings and calculations verifying the adequacy of the glazing
attachments and all imposed loads for the landing and stair guard glazing. Thank you for helping to resolve this last
issue.

SECTION 2403
GENERAL REQUIREMENTS FOR GLASS
2403.1 Identification.Each pane shall bear the manufac-
turer's mark designating the type and thickness of the glass or
glazing material.The identification shall not be omitted
unless approved and an affidavit is furnished by the glazing
contractor certifying that each light is glazed in accordance
with approved construction documents that comply with the
provisions of this chapter. Safety glazing shall be identified in
accordance with Section 2406.3.
Each pane of tempered glass,except tempered spandrel
glass,shall be permanently identified by the manufacturer.
The identification mark shall be acid etched,sand blasted,
ceramic fired, laser etched, embossed or of a type that, once
applied, cannot be removed without being destroyed.
Tempered spandrel glass shall be provided with a remov-
able paper marking by the manufacturer.
2403.2 Glass supports. Where one or more sides of any pane
of glass are not firmly supported, or are subjected to unusual
load conditions,detailed construction documents,detailed
shop drawings and analysis or test data ensuring safe perfor-
mance for the specific installation shall be prepared by a reg-
istered design professional.
2403.2.1 Additional Requirements.[DSA-SS,DSA-SS/
CC and OSHPD 1 &41 In addition to the requirements of
Section 2403.2,glass supports shall comply with the fol-
lowing:
1.The construction documents and analysis or test
data required per Section 2403.2 shall be submitted
to the enforcement agencyfor approval.
2.Glass firmly supported on all four edges shall be
glazed with minimum laps and edge clearances set
forth in Table 2403.2.1.
2403.3 Framing.To be considered firmly supported,the
framing members for each individual pane of glass shall be
designed so the deflection of the edge of the glass perpendic-
ular to the glass pane shall not exceed 1/175 of the glass edge
length or 3/4 inch (19.1 mm), whichever is less,when sub-
jected to the larger of the positive or negative load where
loads are combined as specified in Section 1605.
