Route 1, Box 2550 Encinitas, California 92024 Subject: Gentlemen: This is to report the results of tests and oèservations made in order to inspect the compaction Qf Filled ground placed on certain areas of .ots 260 to 268, inclusive, 274, 276 and 277, 279 to 284, inclusive, 289 to 301, inclusive, 3' to 309, inclusive, and 322, of La Costa South Unit No. 4, San Diego County, California. The fills were placed duririg the period between December 11, 1969 and February 4, 1973. The approximate areas and depths of filled ground placed under our inspection in accordance with the approved specifications are shown on the attached Drawing No. 1, entitled "Location of Compacted Filled Ground." The grodrG plan used for the placement of filled ground was prepared by Rick Engineering Company cnd approved November 18, 1969. The approximate locations at which the tests were taken and the final test results.are presented on pages 4 to 10, inclusive, under the 'Table of Test Results." The laboratory determinations of the maximum dry densities and optimt.ri moisture contents of the major fill materials are presented on page 1 1, under the "Laborctory Test Results." Some of the maximum dry densities shown in the "Table of Test Results" were combinations of these. The tests were token during the weekly periods indicated below: Test Number Week Ending 1 to 13, inclusive December 13, 1969 14 to 98, inclusive December 20, 1969 99 to 135, inclusive December 27, 1969 Project No. 69-11-13D La Costa South Unit No. 4 Test Number 136 to 182, inclusive 183 184 to 186, inclusive 187 to 218, inclusive 219 to 232, inclusive 233 to 237, inclusive -2- February 24, 1970 Week Ending January 3, 1970 January 10, 1970 January 17, 1970 January 24, 1970 January 31, 1970 February 7, 1970 The final results of tests and observations indicate that the compacted filled ground has been placed at 90 percent of the maximum dry density or greater. It has been determined that the fill materials, compacted to 90 percent of the maximum dry density, have a safe bearing value of at least 2000 pounds per square foot for one foot wide continuous footings founded at a minimum depth and placed five feet or more inside the top of compacted filled ground slopes. If f0ot1r95 are placed closer to the exposed slopes than 5 feet inside the top of compacted filled ground slopes, these should be deepened one foot below a 1 1/2 horizontal to I vertical line Projected outward and downward from a point 5 feet horizontally inside the top of compacted filled ground slopes. Tests indicate that the compacted filled ground is adequate to satisfac- torily support one or two story wood frame dwellings designed For the recommended bearing value, without detrimental settlements. In our report of the original investigation conducted at this subdivision, (Project No. 69-3-24BC dated May 22, 1969), we stated that some "expansive" soils existed on the site and1f they were allowed to remain in the upper 3 feet below finished grade some of the lots would require / specially designed footings and slabs. We further stated that these lots would be listed upon the completion of grading The lots where expansive soils were observed to remain within the upper 3 feet, are tabulated as follows: Type A: Lot 287 Type B: Lots 268, 273 and 274, 280 to 285, inclusive, 289 to 301, inclusive, and 303 to 307, inclusive It is recommended that the following special design precautions be taken for the houses to be constructed on the above-listed lots in order to minimize the effect of the expansive soils: Type A Lots Isolated interior piers should not be used. Continuous footings should be used throughout, and these should be placed at a minimum depth of two feet below the lowest adjacent exterior final ground surface. Reinforce and interconnect continuously with steel bars all interior and exterior footings with two 14 bars at 3 Inches above the bottom of all footings and two 14 bars placed 1 1/2 inches below the top of the stems of the footings. BENTON ENGINEERING. INC. Project No. 69-11-13D -3-- February 24, 1970 La Costa South Unit No. 4 Type A Lots (Cont.) Use raised wood floors that span between continuous footings, or reinforce all concrete slabs with 6 x 6 - 10/10 woven wire fabric and provide a minimum of 4 inches of clean sand beneath all concrete slabs. Provide a moisture barrier 2 inches below slabs under livirig areas. Separate garage slabs from perimeter footings by 11'2 inch thickness of construc- tion felt or equivalent, to allow independent movement of garage slabs relative to perimeter footirs. Provide positive drainage away from all perimeter footings to a horizontal distance of at least 6 feet outside the house walls. Type B Lots Those lots listed on page 2 as Type B lots should follow all the above-listed recommendations with the two following exceptions: The continuous footings may be placed at a minimum depth of 18 inches below the lowest adjacent exterior final ground surface rather than the two feet recommended for Type A lots. Single #4 bars placed as directed (above) near tops and bottoms of all interior and exterior footings may be substituted for the two 14 bars recommended for Type A lots. Recommendations 3 to 5, inclusive, as listed for Type A lots, are applicable to the Type B lots also. The safe bearing value for footings on natural ground is 1795 pounds per square foot.
