order to-minimize possible damaging effects due to.differential movements of these poten-
tially expansive soils, Hie following special design and *precautions a r.e recon-irnended:
.11 Avoid the use of isolated interior Diers. Use continuous Interconnected
re i n fo rced footings througkout, and place these at a minimum depth of
24 inches below the lowest adjacent exterior final geound -surface . Whe re, J
in-place rock conditions exist at shal-lo,,Yer deptks, then less depth of ox.-
covation is, p ermissible' to a minimum of 12 inches..
2 Reinforce and -interconnect continuously wil:h 511--cl bars -a I I interior and
~dxferior footings Y-'~ifh one '5 bar of 3 inches cboye the bottom of the
footings and one ~'5 bcr placed 1 1/2 inckes below the:top of the sterins
of the footings.
Raised wooden floor,s. that, spaii between continuous footings are best, or
use p-ontrefe.-slabs rein, forced with at least 6x6-1 0/10 welded wi re fabri c.
A minim'um.'OLF 4,in'ches of crushe'd rock 3/4 fol inch in sLze' should be
placed beneath all concrete sicbs* and-c:)vered with a moisture barr.ier.
Two Jnches of1clean sand should then be p1cced over the moisture barrier
..and below the bottom of the slob.
4. Sepa'rate garcgd slabs from'perimeter footings by. a 1/2 inch*Aickness'of
construction felt or eiquivalen..f., to allow indep'endent movement of garage
L
. slabs relative to perimeter footings. 'Assure complete separation by extend-
t- n n [ thickened edge of the garage ing f~e. M t over the rtull depth a' ti e fro,
b Ojo ....Also, cut off the garage door stops of least 1/2 inch above the slab.
5 Provide Oositi've drainage away from all perimeter foofings with 0 v'e t fical
fall of at least 5- inches' in a horizontal distance of 5 feet outside the house
Walls.
