STAIRWAYS 14. Show the handrails and extensions for the altered stairs. CBC 1012. Show that handrails extend ~12" beyond top nosing, and ~12"-plus-tread-width beyond the bottom nosing. At the top, the extension shall be parallel with the floor. At the bottom, the handrail shall continue to slope for a distance of one tread width; the remainder of the extension shall be horizontal. The handrail extension obstructs the required clear space at the entry door. Please revise. Likely for this case the best solution would be to turn the handrail 90 degrees away from the stairs. This is allowed per 11 B-505.10 exception #3, where the handrail extension can create a hazard. If this option is used Please note on the plans that this is turned per CBC II13-505.10. Any other code-compliant solution would also be acceptable.
