Martin 2470 Unicornia Strec t Carlsbad, CA 92028 - SUBJECT: Report .If Preliminary Soils lnvestigaion for Lot 732, La Costa Meadows, Unit No. 4, Argonauto Street, Carlsbad, CA Gentlemen: The attached report has been prepared to present the results of an investi- gation of the soil conditions at the subject site. It was undertaken to provide the information to make earthwork and foundation recommendations. - - In general, we found detrimentally expansive soils at the site. We recommend the building site be capped with nonexpansive soils. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact this office. - This opportunity to be of service is sincerely appreciated. Respectfully submitted, ALPHA LABORATORIES, INC. - C. H. PROJECT DESCRIPTION AND SCOPE This report presents the results of our soils investigation for Lot 732, La Costa Meadows, Unit No. 4, Argonauto Street, Carlsbad, California. It is our understanding that a two story, single family dwelling is planned. Anticipated foundation loads are in the order of 1800 pounds per lineal foot. It is also understood that slab on grade type construction is to be utilized. This investigation was undertaken to A. Determine the physical properties of the prevailing soils, including their supporting capacities and settlement characteristics. B. Provide design information regarding grading, site preparation and foundations. ALPHA LABORATORIES, INC. SOIL & FOUNDATION ENGINEERING PROJECT NO: 3525 May 13, 1982 Page 3 2. FINDINGS AND RECOMMENDATIONS 2.1 SITE CONDITIONS The property is located on the north side of Argonauto Street and has approximately 97 feet of frontage. The topographical feature of the site is mainly a gentle slope downward from the street elevation to the north- east with a'maximum change in elevation in the order of 9 feet. Drainage appears to be by sheet flow in this general direction. There are no existing structures at the site and no indications of any previous structure. The property is presently nearly void of vegetation and the lot has been cleared in preparation for the upcoming earthwork construction. 2.2 SOIL CONDITIONS The native soils encountered were found to be clayey gravels extending to depths in excess of 6 feet below the existing surface elevation. The soils were found to be loose and compressible in our test pits No. I and 2 to a maximum depth of 3 feet; therefore, the soils in the vicinity of these test pits will require removal and recompaction, in accordance with the applicable portions of the attached grading specifications. The remaining soils en- countered will provide adequate support for the proposed structure in their present condition. The soil matrix was found to be detrimentally expansive and will, therefore, require specially designed foundations, slabs, and construction details, or ALPHA LABORATORIES, INC. SOIL 5 FOUNDATION ENGINEERING PROJECT NO: 3525 May 13, I982 Page 4 r L a cap of nonexpansive soil, in order to reduce the probability of future structural damage from the expansive conditions. We understand that considerable earthwork construction is planned at the site and that import fill soils will be required. We, therefore, recommend that these imported soils be clean, nonexpansive sandy material, and that the building areas be capped with a minimum of 2.5 feet of nonexpansive material. The cap should extend a minimum of 5 feet beyond the proposed exterior perimeter of any structure. This nonexpansive cap will eliminate the need of special design considerations, due to the expansive conditions. Areas of poor drainage, free groundwater, or surficial seeps were not en- countered during the course of our investigation; therefore, no special dewatering will be required. ALPHA LABORATORIES, INC. SOIL & FOUNDATION ENGINEERING PROJECT NO: 3525 May 13, 1982 Page 5 2.3 FOUNDAT IONS Conventional spread footings founded a minimum of 12 inches below lowest adjacent grade are recormnended for foundation support. Continuous and square footings should have minimum widths of 12 and 24 inches, re- spectively. L 2.31 ALLOWABLE FOUNDATION BEARING PRESSURES as determined by soil shear strength are best presented by the following formula relating footing width, length, and depth. Minimum and maximum bearing values are tabulated with the formula. Minimum values are for minimum sized continuous footings while maximum values are determined by the limits of formula accuracy. Allowable bearing values are for full live and dead loads and may be increased 1/3 for wind and/ or seismic loading. SOIL CONDITION AND FORMULA Tan, White, Slightly Silty Sand (Import) Recompacted to 90 Percent) q=0.67x(1+.2xB/L)+O.63xD+O.52xBx(1-.2xB/L) LIMITING VALUES (KSF) MINIMUM MAX I MUM 1.82 Where q = allowable bearing value (kips per square foot), D = footing depth below lowest adjacent grade (feet) B = footing width (feet) L = footing length (feet) 14.32 2.32 ECCENTRICALLY LOADED FOOTINGS should use an effective width (6) instead of actual width (B') to compute the allowable bearing value in the previous formula. Effective width is a function of eccentricity and may be computed by the following formula: B = B' - 2xE where E = eccentricity of load with respect to centroid (feet) ALPHA LABORATORIES, INC. SOIL & FOUNDATION ENGINEERING PROJECT NO: 3525 May 13, 1982 Page 6 r 2.33 FOOTINGS ON OR ADJACENT TO SLOPES will have an allowable bearing capacity reduced from those previously presented for a level grade surrounding the foundation. The reduction is dependent upon slope steepness and the horizontal distance measured at footing bearing level between edge of footing and face of slope. Footing depths (D) for use in the bearing capacity formula should be determined as indicated in the following Figure 2.33A. Full computed values using this depth may be used if the horizontal distance (H) is equal or greater than 8 feet and zero bearing capacity if the edge of footing is located on the face of slope (H=O). Intermediate values may be determined by 1 inear interpolation. ALPHA LABORATORIES, INC. SOIL & FOUNDATION ENGINEERING PROJECT NO: 3525 May 13, 1982 Page 7 2.34 ESTIMATED SETTLEMENT is equal of less than 1/4 and 1/8 inches for total and differential movement, respectively. These values assume that the recommendations presented herein are followed and are believed to be within the tolerable limits of the structure. c 2.4 LATERAL RESISTANCE to horizontal movement may be provided by allowable soil pressure and/or coefficient of friction of ccncrete to soil. The allowable passive pressure may be assumed to be 160 psf at the surface and increasing at the rate of 410 psf per foot of depth. The coefficient of friction may be safely assumed to be 0.39 Allowable passive pressures have been computed assuming a frictionless vertical element, no surcharge and level adjacent grade. r 2.5 RETAINING STRUCTURES Unrestrained, cantilevered, individually supported retaining walls, capable of slight movement away from load should be designed to resist active pressures developed by an equivalent fluid weighing 38 pounds per cubic foot. Restrained walls, incapable of movement away from load without damage such as basement walls, should be designed for the trapezoidal pressure distribution indicated in the following Figure 2.5A. The indicated maximum pressures and distribution dimensions are a function of retained height and define a con- servative envelopeofmaximum pressure. The coefficients pM, dB, and dM are 30 pcf, .2 and .6, respectively. These active pressure coefficients assume a vertical, smooth wall, and a level drained backfill. If these conditions are not met, we should be contacted for new values. ALPHA LABORATORIES, INC. EARTHWORK 1- IH I We, 1 " 2.61 RECOMMENDED SPECIFICATIONS Any grading contemplated or required for site preparation should be accomplished in accordance with the attached Recommended Grading Specifications. 2.62 COMPACTION All embankments, structural fill, structural backfill, retaining wall backfill, trench backfill, and excessively loose native soil should be compacted to 90 percent. Pavement subgrade should be compacted to 95 percent. Natural indisturbed soils having an in-situ relative compaction of less than 85 percent should be removed, replaced, and compacted to 90 percent. 2.63 CUT-FILL TRANSITIONAL AREAS where foundation will bear partially on cut and partially on fill are not recommended. Different compression character- istics of soils in a cut and fill state may result in unequal support and con- sequential cracking. If a transition occurs at footing bearing level we recommend that the entire area be undercut and replaced with canpacted fill. Undercutting should be carried to a minimum depth equivalent to the widest continuous footing below the bottom of footings. ALPHA LABORATORIES, INC. SOIL & FOUNDATION ENGINEERING PROJECT NO: 3525 May 13, 1982 Page 9 L An alternative to undercutting for transitional areas is to reinforce all continuous footings with one No. 4 bar in the top and one No. 4 bar in the bottom of foundations. The reinforcing should extend IO feet each side of the transition line, 2.64 DISPOSAL OF OVERSIZED ROCK that we suspect will be encountered in the excavations may present a problem. One solution may be placement of the rock in fills designated as "non-structural". Rigid structures should not be supported on non-structural fills. These fills will be acceptable if located in yards, streets, parking areas, or adjacent to structures as indicated on Figure 2.64A. .". ~~. . . ~ f : ' - .. .. .. : SECTION No1 lo Srole .. ". . 2.65 COMPACTION OF EXPANSIVE SOILS should be accomplished at relative:y high water content. Moisture content at compaction should be at least 2 percent above optimum moisture. This will result in less energy required for compaction, considerable less timerequired for presaturation below the structure, and greater dependable strength and stability. Close moisture control will be essential to prevent saturation ALPHA LABORATORIES, INC. SOIL & FOUNDATION ENGINEERING May 13, 1982 PROJECT NO: 3525 Page IO 3. FIELD EXPLORATION Three subsurface explorations were made at the lcoations indicated on attached Plate No. 1 on May 11, 1982. These explorations consisted of test pits dug with a bulldozer. They were directly supervised by our personne 1. 3.1 EXPLORATION LOGS The subsurface explorations were carefully logged when made. These logs are presented on attached Plate No. 2. Soil classification in accordance with the Unified Soil Classification System is presented on the logs. In addition, a textural description, wet color, apparent moisture and density or consistency are given on the logs. Soil densities for granular soils are given as either very loose, loose, medium dense, dense, or very dense. Consistency of silty or clayey soils are given as either very soft, soft, medium stiff, stiff, or hard. 3.2 SAMPLING Respesentative samples of the typical soils were obtained and returned to the laboratory for testing. Field density tests were performed concurrently with sampling. The results of these tests are presented on the exploration logs. r . ALPHA LABORATORIES, INC.
