' ' . . ', The reference data used in the preparation of this report consisted· of the ''Grading Plan" prepared by Partners Planning and Engineering, dated 7/11/03, and the "Geotechnical Investigation", dated 'May 10, 2000, prepared by Geocon Inc. Site preparation, grading and testing were conducted in the following manner: Site Preparation 1. Su1face debris and vegetation was stripped and hauled offsite. 2. No surface structures were present in the area to be graded at the start of the wall Construction. 3. No subsurface structures were encountered during the site grading. 4. No trees were existing on the site at the start of the grading. 5. Existing uncertified fill and/or loose natural surface soils were removed to expose the underlying competent natural.ground. A representative of the Geotechnical Engineer has inspected.and approved all bottoms prior to the placement of any compacted fill. Page Two December 5, 2003 Job No.: 03-165 6. The excavated soils were cleaned of any deleterious substances and replaced as a compacted fill. Removals extended down to elevation 370.0 feet. The limits of the backfill compaction covE3red by this report are shown on the attached Figure No. 1. 7. The exposed surface of the approved natural ground was prepared to re.ceive fill by scarifying to a depth of 6.0 inches, moisture conditioning as necessary, and precompacting to the minimum specified requirement. Grading 1. Fill soils were spread in 6 to 8 inch thick loose lifts, watered or dried . back as necessary, and compacted to the minimum specified requirement. 2. The method used for adding moisture and compc;1cting was a water truck and rolling with the rubber-tired grading equipment. Testing 1. Field density tests were performed during the course of grading in accordance with ASTM test method D1556. The results of these tests are attached as a part of this report. 2. Maximum density and optimum moisture were determined in accordance with ASTM test method D1557-94. The results of these determinations are as follows: Soil Type Maximum Density · Optimum Moisture B -Silty Sandy Clay 111.8 PCF 14.8 Conclusions and Recommendations It is the opinion of this firm that the proposed retaining wall backfill site will be free from the hazard of landslide, settlement or slippage and will not adversely affect adjacent properties providing the surface drainage, existing upon the completion and approval of the final grading, is properly maintained. Geotechnical Investigation, Carlsbad Oaks Lot No. 7, Loker Avenue West, Gentlemen: Carlsbad, California, prepared by Geocon Incorporated, dated May 10, 2000 (Project No. 06501-22-01). 2. Update Geotechnical Investigation, Carlsbad Oaks Lot No. 7, Loker Avenue West, Carlsbad California, prepared by Geocon Incorporated, dated February 5, 2003 (Project No. 06501-22-01). In accordance with a request from Mr. Rich Landreth, we have reviewed the segmental retaining wall plans entitled Carlsbad Oaks Lot 7 -Carlsbad, California, Sheet 1, prepared by Retaining Wall Company North, dated August 13, 2003. The purpose of our review was to determine whether the above-referenced plans have been prepared in general conformance with the recommendations in the project soils report. We have the following comment: Laboratory tests presented in the project soils report indicate that most of the on site soils will have an expansion index greater than 50 and a friction angle less than. 34 degrees. Therefore, import material will likely be required for wall backfill. Based on our review, the plans have been prepared in substantial conformance with the recommendations in the project soils report. We have no other comments at this time. Should you have any questions regarding this letter, or if we may be of further service, piease contact the undersigned at your convenience.
