Alternate Footing Design
Lot 589 of Lo Costa Meodows Unit No. 4
Carlsbad, California
Deor Mr. Gerordo:
This is to present an alternate to the special footing design for expansive soil conditions
recommended on poge 2 of our previous report on this project dated June 23, 1981.
It is understood thot the proposed footing depth is now 1.0 foot below the lowest adjacent
ground surface rather than 1.5 feet as recommended in the above dated report. In order
to compensote for this reduction in footing depth, it is recommended thot the 1 .O foot
deep footing should be reinforced with two "5 bars at 3 inches above the bottom of the
footing ond two #5 bars placed 1 1/2 inches below the top of the stem wall of the footing.
All other recommendations for special design presented in our previous report would
still be volid.

Final Report on
Compocted Filled Ground
Lot 589 of Lo Costa Meodows Unit No. 4
Carlsbad, Colifornia
Gentlemen:
This is to report the resulk of tests ond observotions made in order to inspect the compaction
of filled ground ploced in the proposed building area on Lot 589 of La Costa Meadows Unit
No. 4 in Corlsbad, Colifornio. The fill wos placed on June 17 ond 18, 1981.
The opproximote area and depth of filled ground ploced under our inspection in accordance
with the approved specifications ore shown on the ottached Drawing No. 1, entitled
"Location of Compacted Filled Ground." The grading plan used for the placement of filled
ground, dated December 11, 1980, wos prepared by Brian Smith Engineers.
The approximote locations at which the tests were taken are shown on the attached Drawing
No. 1 and the final test results are presented on page 3, under the "Toble of Test Rerulh."
The laboratory determinations of the moximurn dry densities ond optimum moisture contents of
the maior fill materials are presented on page 3, under the "Loborotory Test Results." Some
of the moximum dry densities shown in the "Toble of Test Results" were combinations of these.
The tests were token on the dotes indicated below:
Test Number
1,2 and 3
4 and 5
Dote -
June 17, 1981
June 18, 1981
The Final resulh of tests ond observotions indicate that the compacted filled ground has been
placed at 90 percent of the moximum dry density or greater. It has been determined that
the fill materials, compacted to 90 percent of the moximum dry density, have o safe bearing
volue of 1,930 pounds per quore foot for one foot wlde continuous footings founded at least
1.5 feet below the lowest cdjocent compacted filled ground surface and within the limits
of the proposed building shown on Drawing No. 1.

-2 - June 23, 1981
Approximately 2 feet of non-exponsive soils were placed over the existing critically expansive
soils. In order to minimize poulble detrimental effects caused by these lower potentially
expansive soils, the following special design ond precautions are recommended:
. 1. he continuous interconnected reinforced concrete footings, wherever pdssible,
and place these at o minimum depth of 1.5 feet below the lowest adjacent exterior
final ground surfoce. If isolated interior column Footings are required, these should
be placed at o depth of 2.0 feet below the lowest adjocent ground surface.
2. Reinforce and interconnect continuously with steel bars all interior and exterior
footings with a rnlnimum of one 84 bar ot 3 inches above the bottom of all faotings and
one #4 bar ploced 1 1/2 inches below the top of the stems of the footings.
3. Reinforce all concrete slobs with a minimum of 6 x 6 - 10/10 welded wire
fabric and provide a base layer of ot least 4 inches of sand beneath all concrete
slabs. A moisture barrier should be provided in the middle of the sand layer.
4. Separate garage slabs from perimeter footings by a 1/2 inch thickness of
construction felt or equivalent, to allow independent movement of goroge slobs
relative to perimeter footings. Assure complete sepomtion by extending the felt
over the full depth of the front thickened edge of the garage slab. Also, cut off
the goroge door stops at least 1/2 inch above the slob.
5. It is recommended thot positive drainage, 6 inches of vertical fall in 6 feet
oreos. Drainage sptems should also be provided to collect 011 runoff from roofs
and conduct the water in watertight pipes either into the streets or storm drains. All
surface droinoge should be prevented from ponding adjacent to or running over the
tops of slopes. Inlet boxes and watertight pipes should be installed when necessary
to comply with the above requirements.
horizontally, should be provided around the perimeter of the building in
