Dear Mr. Gerordo:
This is to present an alternate to the special footing design for expansive soil conditions
recommended on page 2 of our previous report on this project doted June 23, 1981.
It is underrtood thot the proposed footing depth is now 1.0 foot below the lowest adjacent
ground surface rather than 1.5 feet as recommended in the above dated report. In order
to compensate for this reduction in footing depth, it is recommended that the 1 .O foot
deep footing should be reinforced with two 15 bars at 3 inches above the bottom of the
footing and two #5 bors ploced 1 1/2 inches below the top of the stem wall of the footing.
All other recommendations for special design presented in our previous report would
still be volid.

Final Report on
Compacted Filled Ground
Lot 589 of La Costa Meadows Unit No. 4
Carlsbad, California
\, '. . #
Gentlemen:
This is to report the resulk of tests ond observations made in order to inspect the compaction
of filled ground placed in the proposed building area on Lot 589 of Lo Costo Meadows Unit
No. 4 in Carlsbad, Colifornia. The fill was placed on June 17 and 18, 1981.
The approximate area and depth of filled ground placed under our inspection in accordance
with the approved specifications are shown on the attached Drawing No. 1, entitled
"Location of Compacted Filled Ground." The grading plan used for the placement of filled
ground, dated December 11, 1980, was prepared by Brion Smith Engineers.
The approximate .locotions at which the tests were taken are shown on the attached Drawing
No. 1 and the final test results are presented on page 3, under the "Toble of Test Res. ":."
The laboratory determinations of the maximum dry densities and optimum moisture cont ~jf
the major fill materials ore presented on page 3, under the "Loboratory Test Results.' 5
of the maximum dry densities shown in the "Table of Test Results" were combinations
The tests were token on the dates indicated below:

The final results of tests and observc:ionr indicate that the compacted filled ground has been
placed at 90 percent of the maximum dry density or greater. It hos been determined that
the Fill mo:erials, cozpocted ic 90 perccni of the rnoxirntm dry dewiry, have o safe bearing
value of 1,930 pcundr per qbgre Fm: for one foot wlde cs; ';rluous Fwt;ny:, founded at least

A++ Vito Gerard0 -2- June 23, 1981
Project No. 81-5-21D
Approximately 2 feet of non-expansive soils were placed over the existing critically expansive
soils. In order to minimize possible detrimental effects caused by these lower patentiolly
expansive soils, the following special design ond precautlonr are recommended:
. 1. Use continuous interconnected reinforced concrete footings, wherever pduible,
and ploce these at a minimum depth of 1.5 feet below the lowest adjacent exterior
final ground surfocs. If isoloted interior column Footings ore required, these should
be placed at a depth of 2.0 feet below the lowest adjacent ground surface.
' 2. Reinforce and interconnect continuously with steel ban all interior and exterior
footings with a minimum of one 14 bar at 3 inches above the bottom of all footings and
one #4 bor placed 1 1/2 inches below the top of the stems of the footings.
3. Rehforca all concrete slob with a minimum of 6 x 6 - 10/10 welded wire
fabric and provide o base layer of at least 4 inches of sand beneath all concrete
slabs. A moisture barrier should be provided in the middle of the rand layer.
4. Saporote gorage slobs from perimeter footings by a 1/2 inch thickness of f-7
construction felt or equivalent, to allow independent movement of garoge slabs
relative to perimeter footinp. Assure complete separation by extending the felt ,'! ,,,I
over the full depth of the front thickened edge of the goroge slab. Also, cut off _I
the garoge door stops at leort 1/2 inch above the slob. ;r~\
5. It is recommended that positive drainage, 6 inches of vertical fall in 6 feet
horizontally, should be provided around the perimeter of the building in landscaped,,
areas. Dminage systems should also be provided to collect all runoff from roofs -
and conduct the water in watertight pipes elther into the streets or storm drains. ' 11 ,.
surface drainage should be prevented from ponding adjacent to or running eve" _-
tops of slopes. Inlet boxes and watertight pipes should be installed when n-
to comply with the above requirements.
