BRIEF COMMENTARY:
The enclosed documentation describes the advantages of using "high-strength" SWWR sheets
for concrete reinforcement Within the various sections, we have provided some historical knowledge
and a general overview of SWWR, the SWWR industry, and our company, Concrete Reinforcements,
Inc. (CRI). u addition, this information will provide you with the technical tools and appropriate code
references required for design and approval of SWWR for steel reinforcement in various concrete
reinforcement applications.
INTRODUCTION TO SWWR:
SWWR, or as it has been known in the past, welded wire fabric or mesh, has been a standard
method of concrete reinforcement for many years The first U.S. Patents covering SWWR's production
were issued in 1901. SWWR has been used extensively in some of the most historic structures in the
U.S., such as the Empire State Building, N.Y., N.Y., and the Sears TowerrChicago, 111.
We, at CRI, are taking a leading role in the Western U S. to further advance the use of SWWR.
By using state-of-the-art equipment and advanced technology, CRI can produce a superior quality
material for use in numerous concrete reinforcement applications. We have on-staff PE's, with
extensive experience in the design and application of SWWR, plus professional sales personnel, well-
versed in promoting the tremendous benefits in structural quality, and construction efficiency, by
utilizing SWWR
GENERAL TECHNICAL CODE REFERENCES AND DESIGN AIDS:
Steel Wire, Deformed and Welded Deformed Steel Wire Fabric (otherwise known as SWWR)
are both defined as Deformed Reinforcement in Uniform Building Code (1997 Edition). Section #'s
1903.5.3.4 and 1903.5.3.6. respectively. Steel Wire (defined as the cold-drawn wire material before it is
welded into a SWWR sheet) shall conform to ASTM A 496 Specification, which allows the use of wire
with specified yield strengths up to Grade 80 provided the design yield stress corresponds to a strain of
0.35%. Welded Deformed Steel Wire Fabric (SWWR) shall conform to ASTM A 497 Specification.
UBC Section 1909.4 allows design yield strengths of concrete reinforcement up to 80,000 psi (Grade
80) and Supplement SI of ASTM A 496 covers the use of this "High Strength Wire" Please refer to the
Conversion Process sections of this submfttal for "conversion calculations" for substitution of SWWR
in lieu of conventional reinforcing (rebar).
SWWR DESCRIPTION & NOMENCLATURE:
The basic nomenclature used to describe SWWR is quite straightforward. For example: 16 X 16
- D31/D31; the 16 X 16 description is the spacing of the wires in each direction; 16" in either direction
hi this case. The D31/D31 description provides two (2) types of information: first, the wire is
deformed, defined by "D" before the number (vs plain or smooth, which would be denoted with a "W"
before the number); second, the number following the "D" is the cross-seOioita/ area of the wire in
square inches, times 100. So, in this example, D31 refers to a deformed wire with across-sectional area
of 0.31 in2.
All SWWR material manufactured by CRI: (1) strictly conforms to ASTM A 496 & A 497, and;
(2) is tested, and certified, in our on-site testing laboratory, by experienced quality control teams.

COMMENTARY:

• Designs for concrete reinforcement may be based on yield strengths up to 80,000 psi (Grade

shall correspond to a strain of 0.35 % (vs. 0.5 % for design yield stresses of 60,000 psi).
